A key feature of our educational programs is the Care Group. As one board member writes, “Being a teacher, what fascinated me most was observing a Care Group. The Care Group volunteer is elected by the women of 10-12 households that have a pregnant mother or a child under 2. These trained volunteers build relationships, and I believe it is the trust in these women, a peer, that allows community members to embrace new educational material.”

"The hums of motorbikes and brays of grazing cows pervade the bustling community of Kisii, a town of over 100,000 nestled in the hilly highlands of western Kenya. For the next six weeks, I will be working as a project intern with the Kisii Konya Oroiboro Project (KIKOP)—a community led organization that aims to address maternal and child mortality through facilitating peer-to-peer Care Groups of mothers, home visits to monitor the wellbeing of mothers and their children, youth education programming, and strengthening of the existing healthcare system to support maternal, child, and reproductive health. As I transition to life seven hours ahead of North Carolina, I’ve noticed that KIKOP has been going through a few transitions of its own."

"For four weeks, I worked with the community of Kisii, Kenya, on the Kisii Konya Oroiboro Project (KIKOP). KIKOP is a community-based program dedicated to helping the children of Kisii County. I’m so grateful for the chance to be part of this vibrant community and contribute to their health and well-being. I absolutely love how close-knit the community in Kisii is. The people here truly embody the spirit of cooperation, always working together to build community capacity and improve their surroundings. I’m deeply impressed by everyone’s dedication and unity, and I have great respect for their commitment. This experience has also been a fantastic learning opportunity for me. Through my work with KIKOP, I’ve gained valuable skills in public health, like grant writing and community engagement, which will definitely benefit me in the future."

Impact Global Health Alliance’s programs always center informed consent and decision-making; we empower women to make the best choices for their own health and well-being. Women deserve to give birth on their own terms whenever possible. Casa Maternas not only provide high quality medical care, but also provide culturally sensitive services that help put many mothers at ease. This is particularly important in our rural service areas, which are highly populated by Indigenous Mayan populations who often face cultural, linguistic, and financial barriers when seeking medical care.
