Zach's Toy Chest Zach’s Toy Chest is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit created to benefit children of all ages receiving care at local NC hospitals.

We provide joy and a sense of normalcy to pediatric cancer patients with new toys year-round. We started Zach's Toy Chest after our oldest son, Zach, went through treatment for stage 3, Neuroblastoma in 2008. He was 9 months old when diagnosed and is now a healthy and thriving teenager who's currently 16 years cancer-free. Because we understand exactly what kids of all ages and families are going through when in treatment and after the main part is over, but still must go for follow-up cancer checks, we have a unique take on how we help. ZTC is the only non-profit in the Southeast US that collects and delivers new toys and other essentials to hospitals and clinics year-round. NeeDoh is a squishy sensory toy that you can squeeze and stretch for a satisfying, hands-on fidget experience!

When collecting toys for children going through cancer treatment, teens can easily be overlooked. Age-appropriate items like Needohs are a great reminder that toy donations aren't just for little kids. Older kids and teens deserve to feel remembered, too! 💛

Childhood cancer affects so much more than a child’s physical health. Hospital stays and treatment can take children away from their usual routines, friends, and the simple joys of being a kid.

At Zach’s Toy Chest, we provide toys and comfort items to children going through cancer treatment because we know that play, comfort, and moments of happiness still matter during difficult times.

🧸 Toy Chest Tuesdays are back!

This week’s highlight is one of the sweetest comfort toys around: stuffed animals!

A stuffed animal can be more than just a toy. For children, having a soft and familiar friend nearby can bring comfort during stressful or unfamiliar moments.

As Rice University shares, “A fluffy friend can make a trip to the doctor or sleeping in the dark seem a little less daunting.”

At Zach’s Toy Chest, we love the comfort, joy, and sense of normalcy that a cuddly friend can bring to a child. 💛

Zach’s Toy Chest started after Zachary, a 10-month-old diagnosed with neuroblastoma, went through cancer treatment. During his treatment at Duke Children’s Hospital, his family noticed how little there was for kids to do during long days in the hospital.

That inspired the creation of Zach’s Toy Chest — with a mission to help kids focus on fun and play, not cancer.

Today, ZTC provides new, unwrapped toys to pediatric patients year-round, with childhood cancer patients always our first priority.

Myth: Cancer is an old person’s disease.

Fact: While cancer risk generally increases with age, cancer can be diagnosed at any age — including childhood.

Childhood cancer may be rare, but it still affects children and families in our communities. Awareness helps us better understand what these children and families experience.

As Childhood Cancer Awareness Month wraps up, we want to take a moment to reflect on everything our community has helped us accomplish this month.

From spreading awareness to collecting toys and getting more people involved with Zach’s Toy Chest, September has been an important month for our organization.

But just because Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is ending doesn’t mean the work stops. We’ll continue supporting kids and families going through cancer treatment and finding new ways to bring comfort through toys and community support.

Thank you to everyone who supported ZTC this month. We’re excited to take this momentum into October and beyond. 💛
