Holly Springs Food Cupboard - A Rotary Partner

This week the Holly Springs Rotary Club presented a check to the Holly Springs Food Cupboard. For many years the Rotary Club has partnered with the Food Cupboard to help support those less fortunate. In the past year, Roarians have helped deliver meals to those who can not come to the Food Cupboard. Every Thanksgivings a group of Holly Springs Rotarians deliver special holiday meals. We are thankful that we can provide this support.

This year we have started a new initiative with them. Traditionally the Food Cupboard supplied basic hygiene products. They can no longer do this due to higher priorities. Rotary is stepping in to fill this need and the check this week will allow more hygiene products to be made available to those they serve. Among the items are dental kits, shampoo, and deodorant.

We are thankful for our partnership with the Food Cupboard. It helps the Rotary Club meet one of its basic values - taking care of others.

Member Moment - Kim Saunders-Soubonic
This week at the Holly Springs Rotary Club, one of newer members provided their Member Moment. Member Moments help fellow Rotarians learn more about each other. Kim started her talk sharing about her life caring for others and this is something that she continues to do in her life. As she stated, its part of her DNA. This passion led her into her being a nurse for 34 years.

Kim has been a resident of Holly Springs for 20 years and has 2 daughters. She is also an author.

About 8 years ago, Kim started a new business - Soubonic Consulting. He is a case management business that looks to help reduce the complexity and loss of focus on patient care in medical situations, where the patient, insurance, and medical staff.

She is now a member of the LaunchHOLLYSPRINGS Cohort 9, and is looking forward to what she has and will learn to help make her business more successful.

When asked Why Rotary - she replied that "Service Above Self" is consistent with her values and looks forward to helping Rotary improve the quality of life in our community.

Helping Youth with Financial Management

This week the Holly Springs Rotary Club welcomed Jasmine Brown, Executive Director, of FACTSforyouth. Over the last 18 years, Jasmine has helped youth better understanding the value and purpose of money in their lives. In addition to be an entrepreneur herself and an accomplished public speaker, she is an accomplished author. She has published a book that serves as a guide for using her program and 2 illustrated books that tell her message.

As part of her presentation, she shared that the need for her type of learning is critical, as only 11% of high school students have a basic understanding in financial management. This of knowledge includes credit card usage/investment options, and getting ready for college. She presents her program as interactive workshops, and uses an unique game to get them to better understand investment and credit card usage.

She is looking to expand her many partnerships into new schools, athletic programs, and community organization.

Jasmine is a LaunchHOILLYSPRINGS graduate, Cohort 4, and one of the five nonprofits have have completed the program. In addition, she was a recently participated in Launch's e Summit "Pitch" contest and was awarded a cash prize.

Foscoe Home Store Visit/Update
With the proceeds of our last Rotary Charity Golf Classic, the Club donated $5000 to Foscoe Home Store. It was part of our overall giving to those who were impacted by Hurricane Helene. Our donation is part of Rotary's ongoing effort to support those who have a special need, either in Holly Springs, North Carolina/USA. or international.

Since our initial donation, we have kept in contact with Foscoe Home Store, including to send needed items to their store.

This week, Sherrye Trice, Executive Director of Foscoe Home Store, provided our Club with an update as to her program and also what is happening in Western North Carolina. Sadly, there is still a lot of major damage that needs to be repaired or rebuilt.

Sherrye described the mission of her organization as being "a safety net" for her community. Her goal is to help local residents to move forward - saving and restoring lives.

With the cutback in programs that help local residents, Fosoce Home Store has seen a 30% increase in those coming for assistance. They have had 30 new clients in the last 2 weeks. One of the on going, biggest needs continues to be clean water and baby formula.

The Holly Springs Rotary continues to support this special program and its mission. For our upcoming fiscal year, the Club has committed to donate $6000 and provide other support, as requested.

Member Moment - Lily Igunbor
Today we had the privilege in having one our newest Holly Springs Rotary Club share her Member Moment.

She started by sharing her family background in Nigeria and how she and her family transitioned to America. They initially lived in New York, where her husband was a doctor, and then moved to Fayetteville, Her husband was a doctor at the VA. Lily now resides in Holly Springs/Apex with her 2 sons. One has graduated from UNC and the other will be attending in the Fall.

Lily was familiar with Rotary in Nigeria. Joining our club provided a sense of "family feelings".

She holds a Master's degree in occupational therapy and has over 20 years in this profession. With the help of LaunchHOLLYSPRINGS (Cohort 9), she is transitioning to a career in real estate and is being supported by a Holly Springs Rotarian.

We are thrilled to have Lily as a fellow Rotarian and look forward to her helping us make a difference in our community and the world.

Congrats Lily

At our last Holly Springs Rotary Club meeting, Lily Igunbor was presented by Club President Julie Shimmel with her first Paul Harris award.

The purpose of the Paul Harris award is to allow Rotarians to support the Rotary Foundation. Funds donated to the Foundation are used to support both local and international Rotary programs. One example of how these funds are being used in the elimination of polio. Over the years, Rotary has supported global vaccinations and basically end the threat of polio worldwide. In Holly Springs, we have received grants from the Foundation that have augmented our support of the Holly Springs Food Cupboard.

Thank you Lily for your support for the Rotary Foundation and helping Rotary make our world a better place.
