Alright everyone I have a young man name Jose thst is New Mexico. He is seaking help with a all terrain wheel chair and possibly some other outdooractivities. Who we got in the area.
My name is Jose Esquibel, and I am an 11-year-old boy from New Mexico. When I was just 18 months old, I was diagnosed with Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia Type 4 (HSP4), a rare progressive neurological disorder that causes muscle weakness, spasticity, and difficulty walking. As I continue to grow, everyday mobility becomes more challenging, especially on uneven ground or over long distances.
Although my disability presents daily obstacles, it has never changed my love for the outdoors. I enjoy fishing, camping, hiking, hunting, exploring nature, and spending time with my family. These activities aren’t just hobbies—they are where I feel happiest and most connected with the people I love.
Unfortunately, my current mobility equipment is designed for smooth indoor surfaces and paved sidewalks. It cannot safely travel through dirt, gravel, mud, sand, snow, rocks, forest trails, or other natural terrain. Because of this, I often have to stop where the trail begins while my family continues without me. Missing out on these experiences is heartbreaking, not only for me but for my family as well.
We first saw an all-terrain track wheelchair at an outdoor expo. For the first time, I saw a piece of equipment that could truly allow me to experience the outdoors without so many limitations. It wasn’t just a wheelchair—it represented freedom, independence, and the opportunity to participate alongside everyone else.
An all-terrain track wheelchair would dramatically improve my quality of life. It would allow me to:
● Access trails, campgrounds, parks, hunting areas, and fishing locations.
● Participate in family outings instead of watching from the sidelines.
● Build confidence and independence.
● Improve my emotional well-being through greater inclusion and outdoor activity.
● Continue making lifelong memories with my family despite my physical limitations.
My mother works full time as a nurse and is a dedicated single working parent who coordinates my medical appointments, therapies, and daily care while supporting our family. My stepdad also provides unwavering love and support. Together they work incredibly hard to meet my needs, but specialized adaptive equipment like a track wheelchair costs far more than our family can afford.
This request is not for convenience or luxury. It is for access. It is for inclusion. It is for the opportunity to participate in the outdoor activities that so many people take for granted.
Receiving this grant would remove barriers that my disability has placed in front of me. It would allow me to experience the world alongside my family instead of being limited by inaccessible terrain. It would give me opportunities to explore nature, build independence, and enjoy my childhood with greater freedom.
