Once common across several Indonesian islands. Today, one of the world’s most endangered parrots. πŸ’›πŸ¦œ
The Yellow-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua sulphurea) has suffered a dramatic decline, driven largely by decades of trapping for the bird trade. Between 1981 and 1992 alone, almost 97,000 birds were officially reported as exported - and illegal trade continued beyond the official numbers.
Today, fewer than 2,000 mature birds remain in the wild, scattered across a fraction of their former range.
But there is still hope. Conservation, nest protection and anti-poaching efforts are protecting the remaining wild populations. And an unexpected part of the species’ story may lie far outside its native range: established feral populations, including birds in Hong Kong, could potentially preserve genetic diversity valuable for future conservation.

The Norfolk Island Kākā is gone forever.

Endemic to the tiny Pacific island of Norfolk, this unique parrot disappeared soon after human settlement. Habitat destruction, hunting, and introduced predators drove the species to extinction before anyone truly understood what had been lost.

🌍 WORLD'S MOST ENDANGERED PARROTS #6

The Blue-throated Macaw was pushed to the brink of extinction by decades of trapping for the illegal pet trade.

When its tiny wild population was rediscovered in Bolivia in 1992, only around 50 birds were thought to remain.

Today, thanks to habitat protection, nest monitoring, local communities, and decades of conservation efforts, the wild population is estimated at 300–500 individuals.

The Mascarene Parrot lived only on RΓ©union Island.

Unlike many extinct parrots, it survived long enough to be described by early explorers and even kept in captivity. Today, only a handful of museum specimens remain.

Every lost species reminds us how fragile island ecosystems can be.

In 2016, only 17 Orange-bellied Parrots remained in the wild.

One of the world's very few migratory parrots, this tiny Australian species was pushed to the brink by the loss of its coastal habitat.

Today, thanks to captive breeding, annual releases, and decades of conservation work, the population is slowly recovering. It remains one of the rarest parrots on Earth.

The Cuban Macaw was the last native macaw of the Caribbean.

Once common across Cuba and nearby islands, it disappeared after centuries of hunting, habitat loss, and capture for the pet trade.

Its story is a reminder that even the most spectacular species can vanish if we fail to protect them.

🌍 WORLD'S MOST ENDANGERED PARROTS #4 🦜

The Philippine Cockatoo once stood on the very edge of extinction. By 1998, only an estimated 23–40 birds remained in the wild.

Today, thanks to decades of nest protection, habitat conservation, and the dedication of local communities, the population is slowly recovering. Current estimates suggest 840–1,210 individuals now survive in the wild.

This species is living proof that conservation can make a difference.
