🌍 WORLD'S MOST ENDANGERED PARROTS #11

The Blue-fronted Lorikeet (Charmosynopsis toxopei) is one of the world's least-known parrots - found nowhere on Earth except the Indonesian island of Buru.

Known from just seven specimens collected in the 1920s, the species remained one of Indonesia's great ornithological mysteries for decades. It was photographed in 2014, while later reports suggested that it was still surviving somewhere in Buru's forests.

But in April 2026, an expedition ventured deep into the remote highlands of Mount Kapalatmada - and found it again.

This time, the team documented at least nine Blue-fronted Lorikeets and recorded their calls for the first time, revealing that this mysterious parrot survives in Buru's remote montane forests.

🌍 WORLD'S MOST ENDANGERED PARROTS #10

The Red-throated Lorikeet (Vini amabilis), known in Fiji as the Kulawai, is one of the rarest parrots on Earth — and we don't even know if it still survives.

Its last confirmed sighting was in 1993. Surveys between 2001 and 2012 failed to find the species, although occasional unconfirmed reports have kept hope alive.

Today, fewer than 50 birds are estimated to remain, if any remain at all.

Could the Kulawai still be hiding somewhere in Fiji's remote forests?

The Broad-billed Parrot (Lophopsittacus mauritianus) was a large, distinctive parrot found only on Mauritius.

Unable to survive the dramatic changes that followed human colonisation, it disappeared within little more than a century of the island’s settlement.

The last known records date from the late 17th century.

Could kākāpō have survived on New Zealand’s North Island for decades longer than we thought? 👀🌿

In 1961, mysterious booming was reported near Venison Tops. Six years later, a bird believed to be a kākāpō was reportedly seen south-east of Taupō.

Neither report was ever confirmed. But together, they leave one fascinating question: when did the North Island’s last kākāpō really disappear?

The Swift Parrot (Lathamus discolor) is one of the world’s few migratory parrots, breeding in Tasmania before crossing Bass Strait to mainland Australia.

Its survival is threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, while introduced sugar gliders prey on nesting females, eggs, and chicks.

With the population continuing to decline, protecting remaining breeding habitat and old hollow-bearing trees is critical to the species’ future.

The Paradise Parrot (Psephotellus pulcherrimus) once lived in the grasslands of eastern Australia.

Once considered relatively common, it declined rapidly as its habitat was transformed by agriculture and grazing.

By the early 20th century, the species had become extremely rare. The last confirmed sighting was in 1927.

The official Kākāpō population has reached 325 birds, its highest level in around 75 years!

A record 90 chicks from the 2026 breeding season have now officially joined the population.

An incredible milestone for one of the world’s rarest parrots.

The Puerto Rican Amazon (Amazona vittata) once lived across Puerto Rico. By 1975, only 13 birds remained in the wild.

Thanks to decades of captive breeding, releases and habitat protection, the species survived.

Today, around 500 live in the wild, with another 500 in conservation breeding programs.

From 13 birds to a second chance. 💚

The Carolina Parakeet was once widespread across large parts of the eastern and central United States - and was the only parrot species native to the country.

Once abundant, its populations collapsed as forests were cleared and the birds were heavily persecuted and hunted.

The last known Carolina Parakeet died in captivity in 1918.
