Kids need active supervision at all times when in and around water. When there are multiple adults present, adults can take turns being the designated “water watcher.”

Don't forget that babies and young kids have thinner skin than adults, which can make them more prone to serious burns. When you're gearing up for some time out in the sun, remember these tips from :

🧴Apply generously and liberally to all exposed areas, especially the face, nose, ears, feet and hands, and even the backs of the knees

😎 Wear sunglasses with UV protection. Look for child-sized sunglasses with UV protection too.

☀️ Limit sun exposure between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm when UV rays are strongest.

👶 Keep babies younger than 6 months out of direct sunlight. Find shade under a tree, an umbrella, or stroller canopy.

⛅ Remember that you can get sunburn even on cloudy days because up to 80% of the sun’s UV rays can get through the clouds and UV rays can bounce back from water, sand, snow, and concrete.

Floatation devices like swim floaties, puddle jumpers, and water wings should not be relied upon as a substitute for active adult supervision or life jackets. They can give caregivers a false sense of security and may hinder swimming ability.

🚨 Most parents don’t expect this… but 81% of child drownings happen in residential pools.
Not lakes. Not oceans. But in backyard pools.
Right at home.
💔 And it usually happens:
• In silence
• In seconds
• When adults think everything is fine
💡 What this really means:
A home pool doesn’t reduce risk—it increases the need for constant awareness.
⚠️ Safety isn’t optional around residential pools:
• Active, undistracted supervision
• Secure fencing + self-latching gates
• Clear “no unsupervised access” rules
• Swim skills for every child
🛟 The most familiar water is often the most overlooked.

Don't let a day of fun turn into a tragedy. As it gets warmer out, you might find yourself wanting to enjoy a nice swim in an open body of water! Before you decide to head right in, take time to understand the conditions and safety risks. Always remember that when in doubt, get out! Children and weaker swimmers should always wear a USCG approved life jacket around open water.

🚨Only swim in designated areas
🏊‍♂️Swim parallel to the shoreline
🌧️Know the weather and water conditions
🌊Understand currents

When in doubt, get out!
