UPDATE: We recognize the concerns raised regarding our recent training and would like to provide some additional context.
San Benito County Search & Rescue conducted this training with authorization to access the reservoir for the specific purpose of public-safety training. Our rescue boat is maintained for emergency response within San Benito County, including water rescue and potential flood-response operations.
With the potential for a wet winter ahead, it was important for our team members to receive hands-on training in launching, operating, maneuvering, and recovering the boat before those skills may be needed during an actual emergency. San Justo provided a controlled location within the county where this training could be conducted.
We understand and respect the community’s concerns surrounding the reservoir and its continued closure to public recreational use. Our access was limited to an authorized Search & Rescue training activity conducted to help ensure our volunteer team is prepared to respond when needed.

Today’s training focused on familiarization and hands-on operation of our Search & Rescue boat.
Team members worked through pre-launch equipment and safety checks, including life vests, rescue equipment, paddles, pump, drain plugs, ropes, and emergency features. We also covered crew roles, rope handling, launching and recovery, motor operation, and maneuvering the boat both forward and in reverse.
Getting the boat on the water gave everyone valuable hands-on experience and also helped identify a few improvements we can make to better secure and organize equipment while underway.
A productive day of training and a great opportunity to build confidence with another important SAR resource.
