30 years. $300,000+ grown from a single $1,600 gift. Over $80,000 distributed to San Benito County teachers.

In 1996, Sunnyslope Elementary teacher Connie O'Connor told her mother, Joan Perreira, that if she ever passed she didn't want flowers, she wanted the money to go to her kids, the students in her classroom she'd spent every day pouring into. Weeks later, Connie died in a car accident at just 26. The next day, Joan and her husband Michael started the Connie O'Connor Education Fund in her memory.

Three decades later, that fund — held here at the Community Foundation for San Benito County — is still going strong, helping local teachers stock their classrooms with books and educational materials they might not otherwise be able to afford.

We're honored to be the home for Joan's incredible legacy of generosity, and grateful for fundholders like her who honor loved ones like Connie by investing in our community's kids.

The Community Foundation for San Benito County has joined the American Conversation Project, a national listening effort marking America's 250th anniversary.

This initiative brings small groups of neighbors together, across differences in background, perspective, and experience, for honest conversations about what matters most to our community and where we hope to go from here. In a moment when so much can feel divided, this is an opportunity to practice something simple but powerful: listening.

Every conversation we host becomes part of a local insights report, and part of a broader national story reflecting communities across the country. Our goal is to host 20+ conversations across San Benito County by the end of September, and we're looking for community members and organizations to help make that happen, either by joining a conversation or hosting one.

If you believe your community's voice deserves to be heard, we'd love for you to be part of this.
