Discovery Garden The Discovery Garden, a project of the Skills Foundation, is an award-winning public garden located Our thanks to everyone in our community for your support!

The Discovery Garden, a project of the Skills Foundation, is an award-winning public garden located in Legion Park, Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, adjacent to the Kids’ Kingdom Play Park. Since its opening in 2000, the Garden has become a community and regional sightseeing and gathering destination. This beautiful and peaceful place is dedicated to the memory of Courtney Leigh Claton. In 2008, Discovery Garden earned the Community Greening Award presented by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Alliance; the award recognizes the creation and maintenance of a public green space that enhances the community. The Discovery Garden is handicapped accessible and includes a Horticultural Therapy Garden maintained by individuals from Skills of Central PA. Other specialty gardens in this inviting botanical space include the Cottage Garden, which earned the 2016 “Garden of Distinction” blue ribbon from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society; the Time Garden, which contains one of the largest horizontal sundials on the East Coast; and the Children’s Garden, which includes a potting shed, a rabbit hole tunnel and a rainbow garden. The Discovery Garden also contains the Planting Garden, comprised of raised beds planted in the spring by local elementary school students. Dedicated volunteers maintain this community garden; they work every Thursday morning from April through mid-October. Anyone from the community is welcome to come and work with the group. Discovery Garden is located in Legion Park which is a low-lying area that does not drain well. That means it is a prime breeding ground for mosquitoes. Yesterday we set up 4 mosquito buckets to combat the hordes of vicious, bloodthirsty mosquitoes. The buckets are safe, effective means to control the larvae without using a broad spectrum spray. This is a directed, eco-friendly control focusing on the larval habits of mosquitoes. It does not harm beneficial insects or the environment.
You use a 3-5 gallon bucket, preferably not white, place organic debris such as grass clippings, leaves, and plant trimmings. These clippings provide nutrition to the water that attracts breeding mosquitoes. Then add water about 2/3 full. Cover with a wire mesh to prevent small animals from slipping in. You can then add a mosquito dunks or wait a few days for the larvae to develop. One dunk can be broken in half or quarters. Then place the bucket in a shady, low traffic area
The dunks are Bacillus thuringensis israelensis which I purchased from the local Lowe's store. We will repeat this process in the spring replacing the bucket contents about every month.
