Holland Indiana Volunteer Fire Department

Holland Indiana Volunteer Fire Department Holland Volunteer Fire Department -- Dedicated to saving lives and property in our community. To that end, H.J. Meyer, C.H. Dan Tormohlen, C.H.

The Holland Volunteer Fire Department originated from the efforts of the Holland Home Mutual Insurance Company in June 1891. The Public of Holland Indiana demanded that something be done in order to protect their property in case of fire. Meeting were held and it was resolved that a company be organized and dubbed the Holland Fire Engine Company. The HFEC would provide fire protection to those mem

bers of the fire insurance company. Rottger, and William Heilman were appointed to a committee to investigate the cost of a hand operated Fire Engine. Rottger, and August Wibbeler were appointed to form a committee to plan a picnic which would raise funds for the engine. It was decided in 1891 that a hand engine would be purchased for the sum of $245.00 from L.M. Rumsey Manufacturing Company of St.Louis MO. The engine was then shipped by rail to Huntingburg IN. It was resolved that anyone wishing to become a member of HFEC would need only pay $50 for fire insurance rather than the $100 cost required of everyone not on the Company. The 1891 L.M Rumsey Hand Pumper still exists and belongs to the present day Holland Volunteer Fire Department.

June has arrived and we are officially a class 5 ! September 2025, the Holland Volunteer Fire Department underwent a comprehensive audit conducted by the Insurance Service Office (ISO). This review assesses the department's operational effectiveness and administrative capabilities. The previous audit, completed in 2020, rated the department as Class 6/6X. Following the recent evaluation, we are pleased to announce that, effective June 1st, 2026, the department will achieve a new rating of Class 5/5X. This significant improvement reflects the dedicated efforts of all personnel within the Holland Volunteer Fire Department, Holland Water Department, and Dubois County Dispatch.
The ISO audit evaluates several critical areas, including:
*Emergency Communications and Dispatch Operations
*Fire Department Apparatus Deployment
*Personnel Response Times
*Department Training and *Operational Procedures
*Community Risk Reduction Initiatives
*Additionally, the audit considers the adequacy of water supply systems essential for firefighting efforts.
Implications for Residents and Business Owners:
The improved ISO rating may lead to reduced insurance premiums for properties within the department’s coverage area. While not all insurance providers utilize ISO scores in their underwriting process, many do. Residents and business owners in the Holland Volunteer Fire Department jurisdiction as of June 1st, 2026, are encouraged to consult their insurance agents to determine potential premium reductions.
For inquiries, please contact us at (812) 536-3331.
Understanding your area's ISO fire score is essential, as it influences the insurance rates set by providers. A lower score indicates a more capable fire response, potentially lowering insurance costs. However, the impact varies depending on individual insurers.
