The Green Ribbon Initiative (GRI) is a partnership of conservation groups working together for many years to protect the natural beauty and biological diversity of the Oak Openings region. We envision a cooperatively managed landscape containing multiple viable examples of each natural community comprising the Lake plain Oak Openings Ecosystem, spread sufficiently across their historic range to capture the full range of variability within these systems and to buffer against the uncertainty associated with climate change. Given the current, degraded state of these natural communities, achievement of this goal will require targeted identification of the best restoration opportunities on both currently protected lands and on privately owned lands.

Each quarter, we release a WPA style poster of a GRI partner location in the Oak Openings - as well as a short article that dives into the history of the location!

This quarter, we focused on Meilke Road Savanna Wildlife Area - owned by the Division of Wildlife, this 22-acre parcel hosts over 40 Lepidoptera species in the middle of Swanton, OH, and more...but you'll have to read the article to find out!
