History of the Mental Health Millage

In 2014 and 2015, Community Mental Health of Ottawa County (CMHOC) faced one of the most significant funding challenges in its history. During this period, CMHOC experienced a $2 million budget shortfall and a loss of $7 million in state funding. These cuts forced the reduction—and in some cases, the elimination—of critical services that many residents relied on.

Recognizing the urgent need to stabilize and strengthen the local behavioral health system, CMHOC and community leaders sought a long term solution. The result was the creation of the Ottawa County Mental Health Millage, approved by voters to ensure every resident has access to high quality mental health support close to home.

Event #20! A day of beautiful weather – yes, it was 58, did not rain or snow and the sun was out all afternoon! A day that raised $50,000 for the ministries of Beacon of Hope. Praise God! We want to say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who made this day possible. Thank you to those who sponsored our 19 golfers, the golfers themselves, and for the businesses and individuals who sponsored holes. We are very grateful for the generosity of our donors and supporters.

Kenya Mission 2026. The team has returned. The trip has been deemed a success! We have already been invited back. Be in prayer for Beacon of Hope as we make decisions on making Kenya Mission a permanent part of the ministry! So much good was done and so much is left to do. But we need to be sensitive to God's leading. Be on the look out for a more in depth summation of the trip in what will be coming out this week in an Enews alert. An update from Kenya:

Our team has been a part of amazing things in Kenya! Kyle was able to teach on the importance of self-care for pastors. Both Gabe and Stacey had opportunities to teach local children and teenagers. The team has also been able to be a part of open air crusades. Praise God for the work He is doing!

Our team has landed in Kenya!

Thank you for all of your prayers for safe travel. The team continues to ask for prayer that they would be a support and help to the people in Kenya, that their logistical needs would continue to be met, and that Christ would be glorified in all things! 💙

We are excited to announce that Beacon of Hope is heading to Kenya! Ever since Kyle completed his doctorate degree in 2017 it has been a dream to take the skillsets he and others have built at Beacon overseas to teach locals necessary counseling techniques. On April 13 – April 22, 2026, a team from Beacon of Hope will partner with the church and commute to Makueni where the focus of our mission will be located.

Our primary focus will be on teaching and ministering to local pastors the basic skills of counseling and its important uses. We will also get to be a part of youth and family ministries. These days are going to be packed full of activity. Please pray for our group’s safety and teamwork. Pray that our food, accommodations, and local travel will all work out.

Please consider partnering with us in this urgent work. Your donation will directly fund travel expenses, materials, and training resources, enabling us to equip these leaders with tools to handle stress and foster mental health within their communities.
