Join us in welcoming Sharmila Samaroo and Eric Kastelic as new members of the Westcore Board! 🎉 They are both native Michiganders (from Ann Arbor and Muskegon) that have migrated to Holland in the last two years. Eric is a civil engineer for MDOT and Sharmila does battery research for a startup. Eric is also a member of the Historic District Commission Board and loves to learn about the latest home updates and improvement projects in the surrounding neighborhoods.

They live in the Westcore neighborhood with their two fluffy dogs, Ollie and Maple! They enjoy walking their dogs around Moran Park, cooking and trying new cuisine, and hiking in parks around West Michigan. They’ve been enjoying the changes they’ve experienced in the neighborhood over the past year like walking through the new green space at Maple Avenue Ministries, trying foods at Corazon De Cafe, and visiting new businesses in Washington Square like Upsidedown Coffee and Antidote Books & Records.

Although these two do live in a house divided (💙💛vs.💚🤍) they’re eager to contribute to fostering a sense community here with Westcore!

Hello Neighbors!

We have an exciting demonstration coming to our neighborhood! Beginning Wednesday, July 8th, and lasting for approximately two weeks, the City of Holland will be performing a bike lane demonstration on 17th Street. This pilot will help the city evaluate the possibility of installing a dedicated on‑street bicycle lane in the future.

Westcore Neighbors will be hosting a community bike ride on July 12th, led by board members Eric Kastelic and John Crawford! We’ll meet at Nuestra Casa (253 W 15th St, Holland, MI 49423) on Sunday, July 12th at 5:00 PM and ride the 17th Street demonstration route together as a group. We’ll circle back to Nuestra Casa to refill our water bottles and discuss our thoughts on the demonstration.

The City will also be hosting an informational meeting on Tuesday, June 23rd, from 5:00–6:00 PM at City Hall in the 1st Floor Council Chambers. If you prefer to join virtually, there will be a YouTube livestream of the 17th Street Bike Lane Public Forum. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snonMTgbNgw)

And make sure to check out the attached city pamphlet for more details — it includes a QR code where residents can submit feedback.

We hope to see you there and look forward to exploring this potential improvement for our neighborhood!

We will come together as a group, settle on the days and times we will meet going forward, and begin our work with a few activities to get to know one another. We’ll also review the neighborhood survey questions for any revision recommendations from the group and look over the map of the neighborhood.

Last week, 24 neighbors gathered at Upsidedown Coffee for our Core Collective informational meeting, and the energy in the room told us this is just the beginning! Now our Core Collective is officially kicking off, and there is still time to join us.

On Sunday, June 7th, from 5-7pm at Nuestra Casa (253 W 15th St), we are coming together for the first time as a group. We will set our meeting schedule, get a first look at the neighborhood survey and canvassing map, and start getting to know one another.

The Core Collective is a five-month listening effort, June through October, where neighbors go door to door across Westcore to hear what matters most to the people who live here. If you came to our informational meeting, this is your next step. If you missed it, this is your last call to jump in! We'd love to have you participate.

RSVP at westcoreneighbors.org/core-collective or email us at [email protected] and we’ll save you a seat.

We cannot wait to begin this journey with you!
