“Coming to Food Club truly brings me joy and eases so much of my stress.”

After years without needing support, Judy*’s budget suddenly became strained again. As a retiree living on a fixed income, rising grocery costs made things especially difficult.

She knew she could turn to Food Club.

Since 2024, Judy has been a Food Club member, accessing the fresh, healthy groceries she needs to thrive.

Through Food Club, Judy also began attending Healthy@Home classes, where she found encouragement and connection while learning how to cook fresh, healthy meals at home. Through Financial Wellness classes, she gained practical tools to budget wisely and save money during retirement.

Judy hopes that one day she won’t need Food Club. But for now, she’s grateful for a community that welcomes her with kindness and walks alongside her as she builds a brighter future. 💚

For five years, Food Club & Opportunity Hub has helped neighbors like Judy access healthy food, build new skills, and find community!

We’re grateful to our friends at Grand Rapids Magazine for highlighting the work happening at Food Club. 💚

Their story explores how access to healthy food can support the health, stability, and dignity of our neighbors.

When budgets are pushed to the breaking point, healthy food is often one of the first things families have to cut as they prioritize shelter, healthcare, transportation, and other critical needs.

At Food Club, neighbors can choose the fresh, healthy foods that work best for their families. Having choices helps preserve a sense of dignity and reminds people that they have the ability to improve their circumstances.

Entering the Community Action House Food Club felt like walking into my local grocery store: shopping carts, walls lined with produce, and families checking items off their grocery lists.

We were grateful to welcome volunteer teams from ITW Drawform and Corewell Health Zeeland Hospital to Food Club as part of Heart of West Michigan United Way’s 32nd Annual Day of Caring!

The teams jumped right in, sorting food and repackaging dry goods to help keep our shelves stocked and ready for the neighbors we serve. Volunteers like these help keep Food Club running strong and ready to serve those who count on us.

Food Club has added a third permanent checkout station! 🛒

Thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area, we’re expanding Food Club services with additional shopping hours and improvements to the checkout experience.

These investments help us better serve the more than 1,300 families who turn to Food Club every week.

We’re grateful to CFHZ for investing in Food Club and helping us continue to nourish, equip, and empower our neighbors. 💚

Five years ago, we opened Food Club with a simple belief: our neighbors deserved something better.

Better access to healthy food. A more welcoming, dignified experience. And a place where getting groceries could be the beginning of a connection to a stronger, more stable future.

Food Club began by listening to our neighbors and asking a question we return to often at Community Action House:

Is there a better way?

Our community answered that question with us.

Donors invested in a new approach. Volunteers welcomed guests. Local businesses, churches, farms, food donors, and nonprofit partners came alongside us. And our members shared their experiences and helped us continue to learn and improve.

Five years later, Food Club welcomes around 1,500 families each week, connecting neighbors to healthy food, resources, and a community of support.

What started as an idea became something our community built together. And we’re just getting started.

Today is Hunger Action Day!

Fighting hunger takes more than a meal. Families facing food insecurity often face a complex web of challenges, and complex problems require holistic solutions.

At Action House, we’re working to build a stronger, healthier community where all our neighbors have what they need to thrive. Our impact is only possible because thousands of our neighbors say “yes” to powering this work.

As more families turn to us for support, we need neighbors like you to Act with Action House!

Throughout Hunger Action Month, we’ve highlighted three ways you can join us in action:

💚 - Becoming a monthly donor to provide a steady foundation for programs that nourish, equip, and empower our neighbors.

🥫 - Packing meal kits to help families cook simple, fresh meals together.

🛒 - Hosting a food drive to help keep Food Club shelves stocked with nutritious staples.

Join us in taking action this Hunger Action Month: https://loom.ly/rnjjfS8

Meet Syd, our Communications Manager! 👋

Syd has always loved writing and bringing stories to life. She was drawn to Community Action House because of our radically welcoming approach, where every neighbor, no matter their circumstances, can access support with dignity.

In her role, Syd helps our community better understand who we are, what we do, and why it matters—connecting people to the ways we nourish, equip, and empower our neighbors.

She’s especially passionate about sharing stories of resilience, highlighting how neighbors navigate complex challenges and the strength it takes to move forward. For Syd, these stories not only honor individual journeys, but also help others feel seen, informed, and less alone.

A typical day for Syd includes a lot of writing—if you’ve received mail or an email from Community Action House, there’s a good chance she helped bring it to life!

A few fun facts: Syd loves playing euchre, reading, sewing, bird watching, spending time in nature, and being with her animals. 📖 🐈 🌿

We’re so thankful for all Syd does to connect our community to the work of Community Action House. Thank you for bringing your creativity and passion for storytelling to our team! 💚

Last week, we gathered for our annual Farm-to-Food Club celebration, an evening filled with gratitude, connection, and hope. 🥂

Together, we celebrated five years of Food Club & Opportunity Hub and the incredible donors, volunteers, partners, and advocates who have helped make this work possible. Because of their support, Food Club continues to be a place where neighbors can access nourishing food, connect with resources, and take steps toward greater stability.

Food Club is more than a grocery store. It’s a place where neighbors can show up with dignity, find what they need, and know they’re part of a community that believes in them.

This kind of care and collaboration is what makes our community special. Together, we’re helping nourish, equip, and empower our neighbors and build a stronger future.

To everyone who joined us, gave generously, and continues to believe in this work: thank you. You help make it all possible. 💚

We can't wait to see what the next five years hold!
