In autistic people, changes in behavior, communication, routines, sleep, interests, or regulation may be mistaken for “just autism”—especially when masking is involved.
Look for changes from the person’s baseline. Ask clearly, listen compassionately, allow different ways to communicate, and take distress seriously.
If someone may be in immediate danger, contact emergency services or a local crisis service. In the U.S. and Canada, call or text 988. Elsewhere, contact your local crisis line or emergency number.
