October is recognized as Down Syndrome Awareness Month, a time to celebrate the achievements, talents, and contributions of individuals with Down syndrome while promoting inclusion, acceptance, and understanding.
Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal condition, affecting individuals and families throughout the world. It is estimated that nearly 40% of people know someone with Down syndrome. Thanks to advances in healthcare, growing awareness, and the availability of early intervention and support services, individuals with Down syndrome are living longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives than ever before.
This month also recognizes the many self-advocates, families, caregivers, professionals, and community members who work together to create opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome to thrive in their homes, workplaces, schools, and communities.
Governor Josh Shapiro has issued a proclamation recognizing October as Down Syndrome Awareness Month in Pennsylvania and celebrating the countless contributions of individuals with Down syndrome throughout our Commonwealth.
Please join us and the Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) in acknowledging Down Syndrome Awareness Month and in promoting a more inclusive world where every individual is valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential.
"With us, not for us." Let us continue to support self-advocacy, inclusion, and opportunities for all.
