Interested in being a water quality monitor this summer? Email [email protected]! The Squam Lakes Association is looking for volunteers to aid in our water quality efforts this summer. Our summer water quality program runs from June 1st to October 1st. Volunteers will be assigned a site on Squam Lake to monitor for the season. This is an excellent opportunity for volunteers to get hands-on experience and to be environmental stewards of the lake we all know and love! Email [email protected] to get started!

Volunteers do not need to have any prior water quality experience but will need to have their own motor boat and must be able to sample bi-weekly during the sampling period. All sampling equipment and training will be provided at the beginning of the season by the SLA.

Native shoreline plants are now available at the Squam Lakes Association!

Shoreline plant buffers stabilize shoreline soil from erosion, act as filters for water runoff, and assist in the prevention of harmful cyanobacteria blooms.

Want to do more to protect the lake? Join LakeSmart!

LakeSmart is a free program for property owners to learn how to switch to lake-friendly living. Lake Smart awarded properties will receive a free native shoreline plant.

May 14th marked the end of our Squam Salamander Brigade for Spring 2026! Thank you to the 30 dedicated volunteers who spent late, rainy nights helping our native amphibians safely cross roads between their woodland habitat and vernal pools.

A special thank you to the Harris Center for Conservation Education for providing volunteer training and helping make this season a success.

With a total of 988 amphibians crossed, here are our final counts for the season by species:

102 spotted salamanders
11 eastern newts
2 four-toed salamanders
4 red-backed salamanders
18 wood frogs
6 green frogs
46 pickerel frogs
19 American toads
4 bullfrogs
14 grey tree frogs
And a whopping 762 spring peepers!

Even though spring migration has ended, amphibian movement continues throughout the summer! Please stay alert when driving on wet nights, especially near wetlands, ponds, and lakes. Slow down, watch carefully, and lend a helping hand to slow-moving amphibians when it is safe to do so! 🐸

Nature, creativity, and a little bit of bleach made for a crafty afternoon 🌿 LRCC member Macie led a program to create unique nature bleach prints using leaves, flowers, and other natural materials. We loved seeing everyone’s creativity come to life!

A huge thank you to our amazing school and youth groups who joined us throughout April in celebration of Earth Week!
We hosted students and staff from New Hampton School, Plymouth Elementary, Holderness School, Mountain Village Charter School, Moultonborough Academy, and The Circle Program for a series of volunteer days to help us get ready for the summer season. Students helped clean up campus, moved boats, tended the pollinator garden, built benthic mats – mesh mats that prevent the growth of aquatic invasive plants, removed invasive plants, completed trail work on Morgan and Five Finger Point, built the JSLA path, filled our new freshwater fish tank, and moved firewood. Students also had opportunities to kayak, look at water samples under the microscope, participate in a nature scavenger hunt, play camouflage, and enjoy the beautiful spring weather!
These volunteer days were organized by our LRCC Ally and Chloe to connect local school groups with hands-on opportunities to care for the watershed and get involved in environmental service.
We are grateful for the enthusiasm and effort each group brought to the SLA!

On Saturday, May 2nd SLA staff, Lakes Region Conservation Corps, and volunteers took to the trails, Moon & Bowman Islands and the SLA Campus for some spring cleaning! Our trail work crew crushed it on the trails clearing 42 water bars on Old Bridle Path and Mount Morgan Trail. Our campus crew transplanted shoreline buffer plants which will be implemented this summer, bundled firewood that was delivered to our island campsites, and removed a large amount of Round-leaved bittersweet growing on our campus. Our island crews delivered firewood to both islands, repaired tent platforms, cleared trails, raked campsites, and dug out fire pits.
Thank you to our volunteers for their hard work and dedication to our organization and community!
