It's official. Charlton has an updated Open Space and Recreation Plan. Now, if we only had a budget allocation for purchasing open space, we could get 50-60% reimbursement by the state.

White campion. It looks like a w**d, it acts like a w**d but it's native, beats out invasives in disturbed areas and it's pretty cool looking in an odd sci-fi way. A foraging website said that it was edible, although, it doesn't taste good. Always thought tasting ok was part of being edible.

It's that time of year to stay extra vigilant as turtles are crossing roads to find someplace sandy to lay their eggs. In the woods, they are safe hiding behind a dozen stems of grass, but they have no protection on pavement.

What do farmer’s sons, Daniel Boone, Thomas Paine, and the Declaration of Independence have in common? Come to the Rider Tavern on June 30th at 7 p.m. and find out. James David Moran will reveal all in his public talk, “Land, Revolution and Charlton.” This free program is being co-sponsored by the Charlton Historical Society and the Charlton Heritage Preservation Trust to celebrate our country’s 250th anniversary. Compact Discs of the radio program The History Show will be sold to benefit both sponsoring organizations.

Sometimes we get asked whether the Buffum trails connect up with the Hodges Village trails. The answer is sort of. From the parking lot at our Little River Property on Fulling Mill Drive, you can walk our main trail, through the mill ruins, to the end and pop out onto the Midstate Trail heading east towards Oxford. This Midstate section starts out as paved road, then turns into an abandoned road and then jogs off into the woods. In the woods you'll enjoy this bit of cascading water. After around 2 1/4 miles, you will hit one of the feeder dirt roads in Hodges Village. This would make for a pretty cool circuit of hike, bike and kayak with some logistical coordination.

If you are wondering about native ground cover plants, here are a couple of options. The yellow flowers are Roundleaf Groundsel and it likes shady, moist areas. The low bush is Bear Berry (an evergreen with bright red fruit) and prefers sunny areas with poor, dry soil.

It's hangover Tuesday. Not that kind of hangover, the kind where petals hang over the important bits of a boom. The red bloom is from a native Paw Paw tree, the other is a jack in the pulpit. Fun fact to file away for Trivia Night, the JITP is related to skunk cabbage.

We just had our annual meeting last night and elected two new members to the Board of Trustees. We offer a warm welcome to Mary and Evans and thank Lisa for her years of service. We are also resetting our membership year to Earth Day to Earth Day, which seems very appropriate. We're an all volunteer land trust but still have expenses to cover such as tax filing fees, website and domain fees, and maintenance costs for trail boardwalks, for example. We count on tax deductible memberships to help offset those costs and to help us bring in expert led events on natural landscaping, birding, tracking and nature photography. Please consider renewing your membership if you have been a member or joining up if you've been wondering how to help our mission of preserving open space and educating on the benefits of having accessible nature as a part of one's life.

A membership form can be found on our website https://www.charltontrust.org/join.htm or you can use the QR code and donate directly through PayPal.

Thank you for your support,
The CHPT Board of Trustees.

PS Woody appreciates the protected habitat, even if he's giving the photographer a little side-eye attitude.

CHPT was out representing at Charlton Earth Day & Earth Fest 2026 Thanks to everyone that stopped by to chat and special thanks to everyone that took the time and effort to help clean up Charlton. We understand that it's incomprehensible that some people think it's fine to toss their rubbish (thousands of nips!) on the roadside, but you stick with it for the greater good.
