Did you know it's officially Dark Sky Week next week here in Maine? Last year, the Maine Legislature passed a bill to establish a state observance called Dark Sky Week: "The 2nd full week in May and the 2nd full week in September of each year is designated as Dark Sky Week to celebrate the dark skies of the State and to bring attention to the effects of artificial light on spring bird migration and the importance of curbing artificial light pollution."

In honor of dark skies, we're hosting an event at Fields Pond Audubon Center in Holden on Friday, May 8, at 7 pm. We'll start with a conversation led by Maine Audubon’s advocacy team, to talk about why responsible outdoor lighting matters for wildlife, human health, and the night sky. Then members of the Penobscot Valley Stargazers will guide us through the wonders of the night sky and help us explore constellations, planets, and other celestial sights.

It's Wildlife Wednesday! Nathaniel has some helpful tips for what to do if you come across a baby animal this spring. Most of the time, it's best to leave them where they are. Watch the full video for more detail (and some cute baby animal photos!).

When you’re thinking about birding, the first places that come to mind are probably remote nature preserves, large expanses of marsh, or maybe even national parks like Acadia. You might not spend your time watching the pigeons that nest in the eaves of your neighbor’s house or the Chipping Sparr...

The sanctuary normally closes at dusk, but for a few events a year we have a special and rare opportunity to see it after dark!

We're kicking off Maine's first ever Dark Sky Week Celebration at Fields Pond, Friday May 8 at 7 pm! 🌌

The evening will begin with a conversation led by Maine Audubon’s advocacy team, who will share their work in helping to protect our night skies and our wildlife community and why responsible outdoor lighting matters for wildlife, human health, and our night skies. We’ll then turn our attention skyward with members of the Penobscot Valley Star Gazers, who will guide us through the wonders of the night sky and help us explore constellations, planets, and other celestial sights.

This special free event is an opportunity to celebrate advocacy in action, deepen our connection to the natural world after dark, and experience the beauty of Maine’s night skies together. We hope you'll join in -- sign up here: maineaudubon.org/events/dark-skies-over-fields-pond/
