Everybody is standing on something.

The Christian will tell you who he trusts and why. The atheist calls his faith reason and denies he has any.

Faith is not the problem. Pretending you have none is.

Most people never notice the trap inside their own outrage.

You look at real cruelty and something in you says that is wrong. Not "I dislike it." Wrong. A real wrong, out there, that should not be.

Fine. Hold onto that.

Now tell me where "should not be" comes from in a universe of only matter and time. A blind universe has no oughts. It has only what happens.

So which is it. Is your outrage just a feeling your genes handed you, or is it a real perception of a real moral law above us both.

You cannot borrow the standard and deny the ground it stands on.

Atheists ask how a good God could allow such evil. Fair question.

But to call anything evil, you need a real standard of good. Not a preference. Not a vote. A standard above all of us.

Take that away and evil is just a word for what you dislike.

The objection only works if evil is real. Evil is only real if good is real. And good is only real if it is fixed above us.

So it borrows a standard atheism cannot account for, then uses it to attack God.

Without God, what makes it evil at all?

A common accusation is that Christianity only spread because it was forced on people at swordpoint. History tells a very different story about its early centuries. For roughly the first 300 years after Jesus, Christians held no political power, no army, and no government backing. They were often an actively persecuted minority under Roman emperors like Nero and Diocletian, facing ex*****on simply for their faith. And yet the movement grew anyway, spreading through preaching, personal conviction, and the willingness of ordinary believers to suffer for what they believed was true. It wasn't until Emperor Constantine's Edict of Milan in AD 313 that Christianity gained any real legal protection, centuries after its explosive early growth had already happened.

A frequent criticism is that faith means believing something despite having no evidence for it, a leap in the dark. But that's not how the biblical writers actually used the word. The Greek word translated “faith” in the New Testament is pistis, and it means trust or confidence placed in something because it has already proven reliable, the same word used for trusting a person's character or a ship's captain to steer safely. Biblical faith isn't a blind guess, it's a confident response built on the historical evidence for who Jesus was and what he did, the eyewitness testimony, the empty tomb, the transformed lives of the disciples. Trusting God is more like trusting a friend who has already proven trustworthy than jumping off a cliff and hoping for the best.

A claim you'll hear a lot is that the Old Testament God is harsh and angry, while Jesus in the New Testament is all gentleness and love, almost like two different characters. But read Exodus 34:6 through 7, where God describes his own character to Moses, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth.” That's the Old Testament God, in his own words. Now look at Jesus. He speaks about final judgment, hell, and accountability more than almost anyone else in the entire Bible, more than the Old Testament prophets combined in many cases. The truth is both testaments reveal the same God, who is fully merciful and fully just at once, not two different gods with two different personalities.
