The Gecko Sanctuary

The Gecko Sanctuary A 501c3 nonprofit based in Massachusetts dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and finding new homes for reptiles and amphibians in New England.

The Gecko Sanctuary is a small scale rescue dedicated to helping geckos (and other reptiles) in need within New England. Our goal is to rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home these animals as well as educate owners and pet stores on their proper care so the need for rescue can diminish.

These animals are not in our custody, we are simply getting the word out in hopes they find good homes.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Hiccup, the bearded dragon who captured so many hearts after being left on our Founder's doorstep, passed away yesterday.

Hiccup battled through many baffling ailments but he remained a loving, gentle dragon who charmed everyone who came across his many pictures or who had the pleasure of meeting him in person.

We ask that you please keep his Foster Mom in your thoughts. She loved Hiccup so deeply which is evident in the images she shared with us over the year he was with her.

Today is which is a day created to help nonprofits during unprecedented times where many are receiving less support and donations but are still trying to perform needed work and assistance.

While we are in the process of closing, we still have several animals in our care and some of those regularly getting veterinary care so we are asking for your help to cover these costs as we try to get these animals healthy enough to be adopted.

The Gecko Sanctuary is a 100% volunteer organization so all funds raised directly help the animals in our care including Hiccup pictured here.

We hope all of our followers are safe and following social distancing guidelines.

Thankfully, we do not need to be distant from our pets so today Romero got a quick betadine soak outside to help with his shell that had to be debrided some months ago.

How are you spending time with your reptiles?

Given the guidelines around slowing the spread of COVID-19, we are pausing adoptions for the safety of the adopters and our fosters/volunteers.

Additionally, we are delaying wellness checks/non-emergency follow ups for our animals but will pursue care if an emergency does arise.

We have also been slow to respond to emails/Facebook messages but will attempt to catch up this week. Like many, our lives have been upended so has been difficult to address requests as we focus our energies on our animals and our wellbeing.

Please stay safe, all. Stay home so we can all see the end of this sooner than later.

Apologies for being so quiet recently. We are still in the process of closing the rescue but do still have animals in our care such as Hiccup, the bearded dragon.

We continue to focus our time and efforts on getting the remaining animals in our care healthy so they can be adopted into loving homes. Within a few weeks, we should have a few leopard geckos cleared for adoption so we will be sharing their pictures, and stories, here when they are ready.

Our plan it to have a table at the upcoming New England Reptile Expo in Manchester, NH and may be at a few other events in the spring/summer.

As always, we appreciate all of your support even as we begin to wind down.

It's where we ask our followers to donate just $5 to help support our organization and efforts.

We still have several animals who are regularly seeing veterinarians including Hiccup the bearded dragon. Hiccup's blood work has continued to have some concerning values so now we are opting for more in-depth diagnostics including an ultrasound and possibly a scope.

All donations are tax deductible and as a 100% volunteer organization, all funds raised directly help the animals in our care.

Appears we have had some issues with our emails being received so if you have completed our adoption application recently please check your Junk/Spam folder for a possible response.

Apologies for this and we are trying to determine why this is occurring.

We still have a few animals in our care who are receiving veterinary care including Kunzite, the bearded dragon. Kunzite has a heart condition, which he is on regular medication to manage, but has also been dealing with dehydration issues so will be heading back to the vet again today to see if we can take additional steps to ensure he is happy, healthy, and comfortable.

Please consider donating to help offset the veterinary costs for Kunzite and other animals in our care. We are a 501c3 nonprofit and all donations are tax deductible.

Adoptable Pet of the Day: Ohila (Leopard Gecko)

Ohila is a 3-4 year old, female leopard gecko who needs some extra care. Ohila must be tong fed as she is missing part of her top jaw and is not able to "grasp" onto insects how a leopard gecko would normally while hunting and eating. We are not sure why/how she is missing part of her jaw but she has been seen by a veterinarian and it does not seem to cause her any pain, just some difficulty hunting.

Given her additional needs, we are looking for a new home that already has some reptile experience and understands that it will take more time than usual to feed her every other day to every third day.

Adoption Fee: $20.00
Application: http://www.geckosanctuary.org/adoption-application.html

All animals are adopted as pets only (no breeding) and must be housed individually. Adopters must be 21+ and provide proof of a proper enclosure.

We will not be at tomorrow's New England Reptile Expo but encourage everyone to check out H**p Haven Reptile Rescue and New England H**petological Society who are both nonprofits that will have tables.

Our current plan is to attend in April which will likely be our last expo. Thank you for always being so supportive at these events over the years.
