"Brick> West End Tortoise Pack Mascot"

Home is where the heart is and a Tortoise carries theirs everywhere they go
A Tortoise takes the time to think twice
A Tortoise is never in too much of a hurry to help :)
At West End Center the children can join Tortoise Pack and participate in projects and activities. We meet once a week. Reading adventures with good moral messages accompanied by coordinated art project activities, performing Goo

d Deeds where ever we identify a need and respond together. For example we organized a food drive. The children collected 574 lbs. of food which was distributed by our local Salvation Army. They also made and sent Christmas cards to troops in Afghanistan, and On Veterans day they made a banner and sent a www shout out to Veterans everywhere. They are currently involved in launching a Pen Pal Program with the , as well as being ongoing participation in the Community GOOD Project. This is a large garden

A pack horse librarian delivering books in rural Kentucky in 1938. During the Great Depression, the Pack Horse Library Project was a Works Progress Administration (WPA) program in which the librarians, who were often called "book women" or "book ladies," delivered books to remote parts of Appalachia.

To share their inspiring stories with kids, we recommend "That Book Woman" for ages 4 to 8 (https://www.amightygirl.com/that-book-woman) and "Down Cut Shin Creek: The Pack Horse Librarians of Kentucky" for ages 8 and up (https://amzn.to/3N8WAtf) πŸ™‚

For adult readers, there are also several excellent historical fiction novels about these determined librarians: "The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek" (https://amzn.to/47ZbdHz), its sequel "The Book Woman's Daughter" (https://amzn.to/3RqH6Cn), and "The Giver of Stars" (https://amzn.to/4a0Ym9A)
