Dressers and other clothing storage furniture manufactured after September 1 will meet a mandatory safety requirement, but furniture made before September 1 will remain for…

09/05/2023

Today, we celebrate a bittersweet victory. Today, the long-awaited and lifesaving mandatory safety and stability standard for dressers and other types of clothing storage furniture goes into effect! Our press release is attached!

It is the result of tireless advocacy from bereaved parents for the past 2 decades putting pressure on the CPSC, the furniture industry, and Congress to enact stronger safety standards for dressers to prevent tip-overs like the ones that took the lives of our children.

A few years ago, we began to collaborate with child advocacy groups including Kids In Danger, Consumer Reports Advocacy and Consumer Federation of America, and then invited the furniture industry to the table (particularly IKEA and AHFA - American Home Furnishings Alliance). Together we worked hard to advance the ASTM standard and get the STURDY Act passed by Congress, no easy feat, I assure you! In fact, some said it would be impossible, but never doubt the power of our determination!

It's been far too long in coming, but today is truly a historic day for furniture tip-over prevention. We are over the moon this day has finally come. It didn't save our kids, but it will very likely save yours, and that's why we did it. ❤️
