LaRue County was formed from Hardin County in 1843. Hardin County was formed from Nelson County in 1792. Meranda Caswell's presentation about records available in the Hardin County Clerk's office from 1792 forward may be helpful to those searching early ancestors to the now LaRue County area. The county lines moved, but not necessarily your ancestors.

LaRue County Genealogy Society Hodgenville, Kentucky

LaRue County was formed in 1843 from the southeast part of Hardin County, KY. Its history begins much earlier with the construction of Phillips’ Fort, which began in 1779 and was completed in 1780. Surnames of the families of Phillips’ Fort include Ashcraft, Brown, Brownfield, Castleman, Dunn, Dye, Friend, Gum, Hodgen, Kastor, Kirkpatrick, LaRue, Logsdon, Miller, Phelps, Nicholas, Thomas and Walters. Current day towns include Athertonville, Buffalo, Hodgenville, Lyons, Magnolia, Mt. Sherman, Tonieville and Upton, which is partly in Hardin County. Hodgenville, established in 1818, is the county seat of LaRue County, KY.

The LaRue County Genealogy Society was established in January 2002. It is dedicated to preserving the history of the county and surrounding related areas. It strives to collect historical and genealogical materials, which are made available to the public through its research library and museum.

The genealogical library and museum are located at 109 N. Greensburg Street in Hodgenville. It is open from 10 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday. In the next few weeks, the library and museum are to move to a much larger location. More information about the new location will be forthcoming.

The Society meets quarterly at 6:30 p.m. on the 4th Monday of February, May, August and November. Dates are subject to change if they fall on a holiday. Meetings are currently held at 109 N. Greensburg Street.
