Houston Area Live Steamers (HALS)

We do provide free rides to the public the third Saturday of every month from March to November from 9am to 1pm. And now a few Sundays.

Welcome to the Houston Area Live Steamers (HALS) page. HALS was founded in 1991 as a club devoted to modeling steam, diesel and electric trains in miniature scale that are large enough to ride. Most model trains are 1/8th scale or slightly larger. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Our miniature railroad is over 5,000 ft long and is located in Hockley Texas at ZUBE PARK. Our famil

y friendly members enjoy trains and railroading. HALS members operate various scales of miniature railway equipment, with one-eight scale being the most prevalent size. Many members operate our club equipment at HALS when first learning about this fascinating hobby. Several of our members own locomotives , rolling stock/cars or even share in the ownership of a locomotive/train. Owning equipment is not a requirement for membership. The club has several locomotives and train cars available for use by its members. We do provide free rides to the public every third Saturday of the month from March to November. Free Train Rides Coming Soon!

Thank you to all that came out to ride with us this year It was a great year for us with 14.900 rides provided during 12 days of riding averaging 331 rides an hour.
During the next 3 months we will be doing our annual maintenance including inspecting all the trains and riding cars making sure they are ready for another season rides. We will also be doing track maintenance, like replacing worn rails and ties as needed around the track. Some of the track panels have been in place for 20+ years and most of those wooden ties need replacing. We will be leveling the track were needed. Some ballast material has washed away with the heavy rains during the year.
Maintaining a railroad is not cheap, So we are asking you to Help Keep the Trains Running via a donation. On our website you can find serval ways to make a donation.

Last Public Ride Day for 2025!
November 15, 2025 will be the last free ride day for 2025. We will be running trains from 9 am to 1 pm. Be sure to be in line before 1 pm when we close the line. No reservations needed, just come and enjoy the FREE train rides with us. Rides last about 12-15 minutes and are 1 mile in length.
We also will be collecting for:
Toys for Tots, a 70+year national charitable program run by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, provides happiness and hope to less fortunate children during each Christmas holiday season. The toys, books and other gifts collected and distributed by Marines and volunteers offer these children recognition, confidence and a positive memory for a lifetime. We believe it is such experiences that help disadvantaged children become responsible citizens and caring members of their community.

SPOOKY RIDES WEEKEND!!! This WEEKEND October 18th &19th, we will have free train rides on Saturday from 9 am till 1 pm. Please note on SUNDAY we do not start until 1 pm and run till 4 pm. Please be sure to be in line before 1 pm on Saturday and 4 pm on SUNDAY when we stop accepting new riders.
Please check the weather before you leave for the track. If it is raining we will stop giving rides. In cases of light rain we may start again as soon as the track is safe. Lines for the Spooky Rides can be very long, easily more than an hour waiting times.
