Volunteers help keep our maintenance costs down and it's a great way to socialize with people having common interests. With the short notice, we were not able to reach out to everyone on our volunteer list, but if you would like to help us doing routine maintenance and cleaning in the future, send us a PM and we will add you. Capriotti's was a great suggestion and everyone enjoyed lunch afterwards. Some people think the black was bland and doesn't match. Any ideas on what color we should paint the railing? The brown primer looks nice. Some were even suggesting white to match the fresh whitewash on Tweed's! The roof is dark green which would match and look sharp.

The Hockessin Historical Society welcomed community members on March 2 for an engaging informative lecture exploring the origins and meanings of common Arabic names. The presentation, titled "Common Arabic Names," was delivered by Instructor Drew Marshall, a specialist in Arabic language with extensive experience studying linguistic and cultural traditions across the Middle East, Northern, East and West Africa.

Marshall guided attendees through the historical development of some Arabic names highlighting how names often reflect family lineage, regional identity, and deeply rooted cultural values. He also discussed the linguistic structure of Arabic names, explaining how elements such as given names, convey personal familial history.

Audience members were invited to ask questions throughout the program, leading to lively discussion about the influence of
religion, geography, and modern trends on naming practices. Many attendees remarked on how the lecture broadened their
understanding of Arabic culture and provided insight into the diversity found within the Arabic-speaking world.

The Society continues its mission to bring educational and culturally enriching programs to the Hockessin community. More events are planned for the coming months as part of its ongoing lecture series.

If you missed this opportunity, Drew will be having yet another class at Delaware State Police Troop 6 in their community meeting room on March 25, 2026.
