Earlier this spring, Ashland was thrilled to host two Screech Owl nestlings that quickly charmed both visitors and staff alike! For an entire week, the young owls took turns peeking out of their nest and curiously observing the world around them.

You can attract Screech Owls by erecting nest boxes designed for Wood Ducks, preferably mounted on a pole to deter predators. They will roost in them during the winter, and if you get lucky, nest in them in spring!

The film features Jim White, former DelNature Director of Land and Biodiversity, and takes you on a journey through these rare, seasonal wetlands and the organisms that depend on them. After the screening, engage with Jim White and other experts as they share insights into vernal pool biology and current efforts to protect them. End the evening with a walk through Ashland’s marsh to hear the chorus of late spring frogs and toads!

Meet Sensibee; our new pollinator camera that is helping us collect data in our Ashland pollinator garden. This is the second camera that has been deployed in the US and the first on the East Coast. Sensibee provides automated pollinator monitoring for real-time environmental insight. This camera is just one method we are utilizing as part of a grant to monitor a subset of the 75 native gardens we have installed throughout the City of Wilmington over the last 4 years for pollinator activity and plant survivability. Understanding biodiversity change can help us determine wildlife impact of the gardens and provide insights for adaptive management.

Some wildlife highlights the Sensibee has identified so far are:
- Two-spotted Bumble Bee
- Southern Yellowjacket (Vespula squamosa)
- Paper Wasp Polistes
- Moths (Lepidoptera)

Are you interested in helping us monitor pollinators at a City of Wilmington park? Sign up here to be notified of our upcoming training in late summer.
