The Hobbs Branch NAACP extends our deepest sympathy to Hobbs Pastor wife, Sis. Elizabeth Russell, as she and her husband (Rev. James Russell) travel to Fort Smith, Ark., to bury her sister, who transitioned from life to death.

Our thoughts and prayers are with them in safe travels, both to and from Arkansas, and for comfort and strength as they navigate this time of grief and loss.

UPDATE: The Celebration of Life for Ms. Janice Books will be held Friday, Feb. 7th at 10 a.m. at Chapel of Hope, 3321 N. Dal Paso.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the loss of a beloved Hobbs, NM native and member of our community -- Ms. Janice Brooks. She was a great retired educator, who even after retirement a few years ago, continued her passion for teaching and tutoring, touching countless lives through her ongoing dedication. She comes from a family rooted in community service and she exemplified selflessness and commitment. At the time of her passing, she was serving as "Treasurer," of the Hobbs Branch NAACP; thereby demonstrating her devotion to making a difference. Her absence will be deeply felt by all who knew her, as she was a source of inspiration and care. We take this time to extend our heartfelt condolences to her family during this difficult time. We will keep you informed of the pending service.

Sincerely,
President Joseph Cotton

What a wonderful, power-filled day, as the Hobbs Branch NAACP concluded it annual Martin Luther King Celebration at the historic BTW School. Mrs. Carolyn Jefferson, principal, wasn't able to be in attendance, but she had a great representative in Mrs. Tyleshia Branscom. Mrs. Wilma Brooks gave a beautiful welcome, which made you want to go out and come back in again. As always, our dynamic mayor, Mr. Sam Cobb and city commissioner/pastor, Larron Fields. We had awe-inspiring speakers (a) Mrs. Patricia Evans, Hobbs Head start (b) Retired educator and former State Senator, Mrs. Gay Kernan (c) Hobbs School Superintendent Gene Strickland and (d) Jeremy Soria, Hobbs School's Athletic Director. Topping everything off were the passionate song duets by the greats Russell White and Missionary Jean Hodge.
It was not only a 'MISSION POSSIBLE Day, but a mission accomplished day. Police chief, pastors, city leaders, United Way reps and many more were in attendance. I don't want to say much more, because I don't want to overlook anyone. But my heart is full. Hugs, smiles, and love. I truly think Dr. King would be proud. I know President Cotton is, as he closed out the program with awe-inspiring wisdom, before Minister Hill gave the benediction.

Thank you again. And if I missed anything in word, deed or pic posting, charge it to the head and not the heart. Each and every one of you are appreciated.

Now one LAST THING! Spread the word about the NAACP annual banquet approaching next month on Feb. 22. Tickets are $25 youth and $50 adults. Please come out and help us celebrate our upcoming graduates.

From the closing of Saturday's Food for all, featuring NMJC's Women's Basketball players helping to distribute food boxes at the drive through held at "Your Safe Space--YSS," to today's United Joint Unity Service, held at St. John Baptist Church, where Undra Choice, is the pastor; the 2025 MLK's holiday celebration was great. City Commissioner/and Lane Chapel's pastor Larron Fields brought a stirring sermon on the theme: "Mission Possible."

President Cotton is overwhelmed at the great turnout and participation. St. John's church members under the direction of the minister's wives, had a delicious meal after the service.

Next years' service will be held at Ebenezer Baptist Church.

2025 MLK, Jr. festivities will close out tomorrow with a walk beginning at 12 noon from MLK Soccer Plex to an exceptional program at 1pm at BTW School.

A fabulous thanks to all participants from the food distribution up until now. We couldn't have done it, without you!

NAACP Branches throughout New Mexico are grieving the loss of an extraordinary man who dedicated his life to making a difference. As an educator, he shaped minds and inspired many to reach beyond the stars. As a history maker and president of the Albuquerque NAACP, he tirelessly fought for equality and justice, embodying the principles he held so dearly. He was a voice who went unheard, a mentor, and a true champion of change.

Dr. Harold Bailey will be missed. His leadership, dedication, compassion and advocacy will resonate for many years to come in the lives he touched, in making this world, a better place for all.

Rest on. Dr. Bailey. We remember and cherish your legacy!
