Indigenous People’s Day:
Did you know that Hobart sits on the land of 5 Native American tribes?

All were Northeastern Woodland Indians, living in the habitat still seen at Fred Rose Park today...
Fred Rose is a remnant of the historic silt loam oak savanna that existed before Europeans settled in the area.

The tribes here were known as Great Lakes Indians, from the Algonquian language group, and shared not only a close similarity in language, but also customs...
the Bodéwadmiké (Potawatomi) & Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo), Myaamia (The Miami Nation of Indiana) & Peoria, and Očhéthi Šakówiŋa (Sioux).

Beautiful summer-like weather this weekend to visit Fred Rose— if you missed our walk last week, you can still enjoy some great blooms!

We had a nice turnout, saw a lot of fantastic native wildflowers, and even some great birds!

Did you know?
Pulling ragweed gives sensitive plants a chance…
And you can still help! 😃

We do 2 ragweed pulls every summer, removing the aggressive plant,
but we’re doing an easy bonus pull this week
to give the other plants some extra help—
so you get another chance, too!

7 native plants species have already reemerged in the areas where we pulled ragweed last year:

* Prairie Rose (Rosa setigera) 🌸
* Cut leaved coneflower (Rudbeckia laciniata) 🌼
* Swamp Betony (Pedicularis lanceolata)
* Honewort (Cryptotaenia canadensis)
* Early Goldenrod (Solidago gigantea)
* Fox Sedge (Carex vulpinoidea)

Stay tuned for more details tomorrow! 😊
(hint: we will be meeting at the Lakeshore side
— THIS Wednesday at 5p 😁)
