🐓 ‼️15 more of our rescued “Highway Hens” just moved to their new farm today 2 hours south of us at
Haven Farm Animal Sanctuary! ‼️🐓
We are so happy that these 15 ladies get to live out their lives in retirement in safe sanctuary! They have already been such a pleasure for us to watch as they learn to catch bugs & be free chickens exploring the farm. They will bring so much joy to our friends at Haven Farm Sanctuary!

We rescued over 100+ of these hens a few weeks ago when they fell off a transport truck on the highway as they were headed to slaughter. Their egg laying days over with no retirement ahead! It was 95° heat that day and witnesses were horrified to watch the driver get back in his truck & LEAVE THEM on the road to die in the heat. (This is factory farming folks. They don’t care about the lives at stake. It’s all profit! 😡
Luckily some good Samaritans jumped into action and over 30 crates - each with 14 hens crammed inside - were brought to our farm in the back of a Horse Trailer. Over 200 hens died of heat stroke (or the wreck itself) that day. Their remains were taken to and donated to a Wolf Sanctuary in Lafayette by the same good Samaritan that saved them off the road. (At least their sacrifice can nourish another!)
Absolutely Amazing!
The hens were weak and cooking alive on the highway so they arrived gasping for air & just clinging to life. Many arrived with barely any feathers covering their bodies as well as cuts & scrapes & open wounds on their backs. A clear result of being crammed into cages or crammed into one big crowded “free range” room. (which is standard practice in large egg production facilities.) Poor hygiene & the constant tax on their bodies to lay eggs daily left their combs & skin pale & mineral deprived.
After weeks of daily electrolytes, probiotics, vitamin and mineral supplements, and a healthy diet jampacked with fresh fruits, veggies, seeds, & nutrients ~ feathers started to grow back and color started to come back into their combs.
When they first arrived, they would pile on top of each other almost suffocating each other as the crammed closeness (of being overcrowded) was sadly all the comfort they’ve ever known.
Slowly, we have been able to see their individual personalities come out as they began to gain more confidence exploring the grass & to adventure out on their own through the “chicken forest”. We’ve watched them learn to scratch the earth for bugs & roll in the dust & sunbathe. Not a single hen has passed away since that day. They have continued to thrive more & more every day.
Over 70 hens so far have been placed in safe homes & safe sanctuaries. ❤️ So I love-love-love days like this with these beautiful endings to the hens chapter at our farm. Now they go on to their next beautiful chapter!
