What is Shavuot?
Shavuot , the feast of weeks, is celebrated seven weeks after the second Passover seder. Although Shavuot began as an ancient grain harvest festival, the holiday has been identified since biblical times with the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai.

What are some customs and practices for Shavuot?
– To commemorate the giving of the Torah at Sinai there is a tradition of staying up all night studying Jewish texts in what is called a tikkun.

– On Shavuot the Book of Ruth is read.

– Traditionally dairy foods are eaten on Shavuot.

– In order to mark the agricultural history of Shavuot, some decorate their house and synagogues with a floral theme.

Yom HaShoah/Holocaust Memorial Day 2017
Monday, April 24, 2017 - Starting on Sunday Evening.
Yom HaShoah (Yom HaShoa, Yom HaZikaron laShoah ve-laGvura) officially translates to "Remembrance Day for the Holocaust and Heroism", but is often known as "Holocaust Remembrance Day" in English. It is an occasion to commemorate the lives and heroism of the six million Jewish people who died in the Holocaust between 1933 and 1945 during World War II.
Zipporah, the lady in the picture, is a Holocaust surviver from Poland who was in both Auschwitz-Birkenau and Bergen-Belsen. Thanks to your partnership with Project Nehemiah we are able to help this wonderful lady on a regular basis. (The man in the white shirt is her handicapped son). Please pray for them.

The jolly festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar (late winter/early spring). It commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day,” as recorded in the Megillah (book of Esther).
