Phew. 🙌🏻🥰 we will get pictures posted in the coming days… but for now we want to say THANK YOU! Tonight we gave out 114 scholarships to 72 students… totaling over $156,000. Thank you to our Scholarship Committee Chair Nancy Durnan for pouring her heart and soul into “scholarship season” from January until May. There are many community foundations who have a paid scholarship officer who guides the application collection, review, and selection process as well as the reception; we have a volunteer Nancy Durnan and she IS irreplaceable! We also want to shout out “Mr. Nancy Durnan”, Kit, for all of the errands ran and items picked up to make tonight a success!

Thank you to our scholarship committee members Sonya Murrell, J. Bond, Jon Averill, Chris Chanlett, Patty Jeffries, Melinda Gore, Kim Jordan, and Anna Hardy for all of the prep and planning, as well as set up. Another shout out to Jon for running our AV/Tech and to Patty Jeffries for being our photographer. Extra thanks to Kim Jordan for arranging for use of 90 additional chairs at the Freight Depot. And to Stacy Ford for assisting! 🩷💐 Thank you to Skip Mills for blessing our food, and thank you to The Market for a delicious meal to enjoy with deserving students and their families. Thank you to the parents and students who stayed after our reception to help clean up, and to the City of Hinton for this beautiful space. Thank you to Chris Chanlett & Regina Eckle for donating and arranging the gorgeous, local flowers used as our centerpieces!

Thank you to the donors who made this ALL possible - by giving not just a one time gift for this year, but contributing to our endowment which will give for years to come.

We have the best community. Thank you ALL for being part of it! Can you tell we are feeling grateful! 🥲

LETTER FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

To our donors, friends, and community members:

This morning, as I sit at my desk drinking my third cup of coffee 😆 after a week spent preparing for our biggest event of the year -where we will award more than $156,000 in scholarships to 72 local students - I am feeling incredibly grateful.

Over the last 9 months, I have poured my heart into this foundation. I have met some of the most genuine and generous people Summers County has to offer, and I’ve had the privilege of helping strengthen and grow the foundation’s work in meaningful ways.

Most importantly, I have learned so much about this community. I thought I already knew about most of the good happening here… but I was wrong. This community is even more generous, hopeful, and caring than I ever imagined.

For all of those reasons, it is difficult for me to share that I will be stepping back from my full-time role as Executive Director in July.

I have been presented with another opportunity and, after a great deal of thought, I have decided it is the best fit for my family’s needs at this time. This decision was HARD; mostly because I truly love this foundation. While this role is certainly challenging at times, it is also deeply meaningful and rewarding.

As we begin the search for the next Executive Director, I can honestly say this is one of the best jobs imaginable for someone who loves people and believes in the power of community. The full job posting can be found here: https://hintonareafoundation.org/employment/

A few quick details:
• Full-time, 40 hours/week with flexibility for appointments, childcare pickup/dropoff, and occasional evening/weekend events
• A blend of leadership, fundraising, operations, and community engagement. You won't do the same thing every day; there is a lot of variety which is FUN!
• Salary range: $40,000–$70,000 (no health or retirement benefits currently available)

More than anything, we are looking for the right person. Someone who cares deeply about this community and wants to help move this mission forward.

Please send a cover letter and resume to [email protected] by May 29.

While I may be stepping away from the position full-time, it is absolutely my intention to remain involved throughout this transition on a part-time basis and, eventually, as a volunteer. So to the many people I have connected with through this foundation - this is not goodbye. ❤️

I will continue cheering this organization and this community on every step of the way. Thank you to every donor, volunteer, supporter, board member, student, and community partner who has welcomed and supported me over these past several months. It has truly been an honor to serve in this role.

Sincerely, Christina

🎊 SURPRISE drop in for our 2026 Summers County Teacher of the Year!

It was our pleasure to present Briana Miller with this cash prize from the Lilly-Wilson Education Fund, established by Ralph and Patty Wilson of Hinton to benefit the Summers County Teacher of the Year without restriction for its use.

Our educators are some of the most important people in our community and it is our pleasure to bestow this award and carry on the Lilly-Wilson legacy in honoring them.

The beauty of our foundation is that these funds will only continue to grow over time — truly making an impact for generation after generation!

Congratulations Briana!!!!

Let’s SAVE the Lawrence Memorial at Hilltop Cemetery!

Thank you to Mrs. Betty Hendrick for this generous donation toward the repair of the iconic Lawrence Memorial. Our cemeteries preserve our local heritage in more ways than one…. And it is important to restore this monument to its former glory. The caretakers of the Hilltop Cemetery are working toward a goal to repair in phases. So far, they are about a quarter of the way to the phase one goal.

Please help save this piece of Hinton!!!

Today, Summers County High School students had the incredible opportunity to hear from Mitch Bowling, who shared his journey from growing up right here and graduating from Hinton High School to leading a successful company as CEO of EverDriven Technologies, and the lessons he’s learned along the way.

He reminded students that coming from a small, close-knit community like ours is something to be proud of. The values, resilience, and perspective gained here can truly set you apart no matter where life takes you after high school.

Tonight, we’re honored to celebrate Mitch once again as he is inducted into the Summers County Inspiration Gallery… a powerful reminder to our students of just how far they can go and the impact they can make.

Join us this evening at Summers County High School!
🕓 Refreshments begin at 4:30 PM
🕔 Program begins at 5:00 PM in the cafeteria
