Rescue isn’t easy, it isn’t glamorous. You don’t get rich or become TikTok famous.
You see things that make normal people go “what the f&ck is wrong with people?!” because they can’t fathom what we see and hear every day in rescue. Sadly, very little shocks us any more.
In the last 10 days there have been rescues around Oklahoma who have taken in “leftover” dogs from a ceremony where they are boiled and eaten. They have taken in dogs from a man who was burning them alive in a barrel. They have removed carcasses of dogs that were left in a metal shipping crate without food or water. I read a story about a rescue that took a cat that was crying and rescued by a neighbor who found it in a cage, wrapped in a trash bag and left on a grill that had been turned on. And just yesterday I had a message from a woman who found 4 dogs crammed into a crate and left on a train track.
We need to do better. Shelters are flooded and begging for adoptions or rescues to help. Rescues can’t find fosters and funds are at an all time low.
Stop yelling at shelters who are forced to euthanize because there isn’t unlimited space. There are so many dogs and cats we would need several airplane hangers just to house them all…then you still have to have the money and manpower to feed, vaccinate and care for them.
Hug your rescuer. Buy the over worked shelter employee a cup of coffee, or just smile at them.
We are all emotionally drained and as I said earlier, we aren’t here for the glamor or to be rich. We are here to help the animals who can’t help themselves. 💔
