The Hingham Citizens Police Academy Alumni were honored to have as our guest speaker at our most recent meeting Somerville PD Retired Detective Mario Oliveira. On November 2, 2010, Detective Oliveira was shot six times at point blank range while serving an arrest warrant and unfortunately his injuries ultimately resulted in his retirement. Since then Detective Oliveira has dedicated his time to educating and assisting Police departments & law enforcement officers and their families on the inherent dangers of police work and how to cope with the tragedy of being seriously or fatally injured in the line of duty.

Detective Oliveira is the President and Co-Founder of the Violently Injured Police Officers Organization which is not only a resource for injured officers but is also looking to raise awareness and generate legislature to support the cause.

Detective Oliveira documented his story in the book Gunrunner which is also in the process of being made into a movie.

This week we had Hingham Police Detective Sergeant Philip Emmott present to the Alumni on the topic of Scam Awareness. He covered some of the current common scams and how citizens can protect themselves from being victimized by a scammer.

Some basic Red Flags to look for are:

-- Legitimate businesses don't accept gift cards as payment.

-- Government agencies don't call warning of emminent arrests.

-- If you're coached "no to tell anyone else about this."

Whether it is an email, a phone call, or someone knocking on your door ... if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. And you can always call the HPD to report an attempted scam.
