The Hingham High School Class of 2026 graduates this Saturday. 🎓

Take a look back at Hingham High’s Class of 1894 — 132 years ago. Just 27 students graduated in a ceremony filled with essay readings, dramatic performances, music, and spirited debate.

Topics included equal pay for women and whether towns should take on public debt. Some things never change.

Check out those essay titles and imagine the conversations happening in Hingham more than a century ago.

This Memorial Day, we remember Hingham’s veterans and the lives they built after serving our country.

This carousel highlights Civil War veteran Loring H. Cushing (1840–1927), who served at age 22 in Company K of the 43rd Massachusetts Volunteers from Hingham. Returning home to South Hingham in 1863, Cushing became a skilled toy and doll furniture maker and an active member of Hingham’s Arts & Crafts movement.

Images include Cushing’s tintype portrait with painted cheeks, his coat, cap, and hymnal, along with examples of his beautifully crafted miniature doll furniture, including ladder-back chairs with woven rush seats and his original maker’s label - all in the Collection of the Hingham Historical Society.

Come learn more about Samuel Sprague in our exhibit Witness: Hingham in the Age of Revolution

Samuel Sprague, only 19 at the time, was among the protesters who boarded the Dartmouth, Eleanor, and Beaver and dumped 342 chests of British tea (equivalent to $2.3 million today) into Boston Harbor.
Sprague served during the American Revolutionary War and spent much of his life working as a laborer and craftsman.
By the mid 19th century, he had become something of a historical curiosity because he personally remembered major Revolutionary era events that by then already seemed very distant to most Americans.
He lived into his 90s and passed away in 1843. In his later years, newspapers and historians often interviewed him as one of the last surviving participants of the Boston Tea Party, making him a direct living connection to the founding generation of the United States.
