About 200 members of the 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team returned to Fort Stewart, completing a nine-month deployment to eastern Europe as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve. As the Raider Brigade makes its way home, other 3rd ID units, including its headquarters, Division Artillery and 3rd Aviation Combat Brigade, are heading back to eastern Europe. Photo by Pat Donohue

Welcome Marne 7! For the 3rd Infantry Division’s newest command sergeant major, returning to Fort Stewart feels a lot like home. Command Sgt. Maj. Donald Durgin assumed his role as the division’s top enlisted advisor and Marne 7 Friday morning at Cottrell Field. Coming back to Fort Stewart is also for Durgin and his family — he met and married his wife Katie during a previous assignment at Stewart, and the couple’s three daughters were born at Winn Army Community Hospital.

U.S. Army Garrison Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield staff said farewell to Col. Marc Austin and welcomed their new Garrison Commander, Col. Gabe Weaver, during a change of command ceremony held at Cashe Gardens, July 22. Weaver said he was humbled by the opportunity to serve this installation and the people who call it home. “There’s a strong foundation already in place and working with our incredible teams, soldiers, and dedicated civilians – I’m sure that we can continue to excel and make this a place where people want to be,” Weaver said. U.S. Army Installation Command Installation Directorate-Readiness Director, Patrick Appelman, presided over the ceremony and remarked he is encouraged by the leadership exhibited at Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield. Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield Soldiers now have more educational opportunities through a continuing memorandum of agreement with Georgia Southern University. The signing ceremony was held July 18 at GSU’s Statesboro campus. “I think what is developing between Georgia Southern and the military, specifically the 3rd ID and Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield, is more of a relationship,” said Col. Marc Austin, Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield garrison commander. “A partnership is transactional, and we are to the point where we are beyond transactional. We ask for help and it comes out.” The update includes an agreement for the university to provide three undergraduate programs, which include Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies, Associate of Arts and Associate of Science.
