Today we honor commemorating June 19, 1865, when enslaved Africans and their descendants in Galveston, Texas, who had been trafficked and forced into slavery in America, finally learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by the President.

The news did not reach enslaved Africans and their descendants immediately. Juneteenth reminds us that withholding truth and rewriting history both have consequences. Freedom requires truth, and truth frees.

As we reflect on this day, we honor the resilience of those who endured, celebrate the progress that has been made, and recommit ourselves to truth, justice, and opportunity for all.

🚨 SCAM ALERT 🚨

The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office would like to make the public aware of an ongoing telephone scam targeting local residents.

A citizen recently reported receiving a call from an individual claiming to be “Sgt. Christopher Taylor, Badge #4775” with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office. The caller advised the victim that he had allegedly failed to appear for Grand Jury service and was required to make a payment to avoid legal consequences.

The phone number used by the scammer was 912-456-1152. Additionally, the voicemail associated with this number identifies itself as the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, which may make the call appear legitimate and could mislead members of the public.

⚠️ Please be advised:

• The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office will NEVER call and demand payment over the phone to avoid arrest, warrants, jury duty violations, or any other legal action.
• Do not provide personal information, banking information, gift card numbers, or electronic payments to anyone making these claims.
• If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately.

If you are unsure whether a call is legitimate, contact the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office.
