Sea Island white rice peas. Typically June/ early July is when many Gullah Geechee farmers get their peas in the ground for a late summer/fall harvest. Sea Island rice peas are particularly special. Smaller then most varieties of cow peas and planted in the old days as a companion crop along with rice because of it's water tolerance. In the lady pea family of cow peas, it has a flavor that is next level. Creamy, sweet and just good. I will be planting these in my backyard beds and also at our African diaspora plots at Wormsloe historic site in Savannah, Georgia. Also will be eating some soon because they are addictive.
