Hilton Head Island’s 350/30 Celebration

Hilton Head Island’s 350/30 Celebration Thus, Hilton’s Headland became Hilton Head Island. 320 years later, Hilton Head Island became the Town of Hilton Head Island.

A Celebration of the 350th anniversary of Captain William Hilton's sighting of Hilton Head Island & the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Town of Hilton Head Island In September of 1663, Captain William Hilton was sailing through Port Royal Sound when he spotted a headland on a nearby island .His eagle eye earned him to the honor of putting Hilton on the map, as mapmakers named the island i

n his honor. And now, 30 years later, a group of volunteers are organizing a 350/30 year anniversary blowout to commemorate both events. The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce, the Coastal Discovery Museum, the Heritage Library Foundation and the Town of Hilton Head are all working together with a slew of area organizations to make the week-long event happen. It will kick off with a town open house Sept. 30, 2013 and culminate in a huge beach party Oct. 5, 2013, with events in between including tours or historic sites and lectures on the area. We invite all locals and organizations to participate. To be part of history, call Linda Piekut at 843-686-6560 or email [email protected].

These babies win awards. When the sunlight makes the white sand sparkle, or you spot a family of dolphins near the shore—we promise, you’ll forget your feet hurt.
