BEAUFORT COUNTY PLASTIC REDUCTION INITIATIVE

What Residents, Visitors, and Businesses Need to Know

Beaufort County and local municipalities are advancing new measures to reduce plastic waste, protect waterways, improve community appearance, and support a cleaner coastal environment.

Key Changes Under the Ordinance

Single-use plastic checkout bags will no longer be used.
Expanded Polystyrene Foam (Styrofoam’™) cups and food containers will no longer be used.
Plastic utensils and straws will be available by request only.
Businesses are encouraged to transition to reusable, recyclable, or compostable alternatives.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to Bring
Your Own Bag (BYOB).
Transition period ends February 7, 2027.
Why This Matters

Plastic bags and foam containers are among the most common forms of roadside and shoreline litter.
Single-use plastics threaten wildlife, waterways, and tourism-dependent coastal communities.
Reducing unnecessary plastic use lowers cleanup costs and improves community appearance.
Small behavior changes can create significant long-term environmental benefits.
