With billions of dollars available to improve transportation infrastructure, states have a chance to try new strategies for addressing congestion. But some habits are hard to break.

HHI County Council members voted in favor of this overwhelmingly unpopular proposal last week that could really change life here in the island negatively. It wasn’t just Stu Rodman, who lost his recent primary soundly due to his blatant corruption, but sadly Larry McElynn voted for this as well.
‘Arrogant and short-sighted’: Rodman is slammed for his vote in favor of 278 resolution
The public outcry follows Rodman’s vote to proceed with a plan to build one six-lane bridge instead of two.

Another common sense reaction from an elected official that's looking out for his citizens.
Will everyone else just sit by and watch our community get paved over????🦗🦗🦗
Alex Brown, Ward 1 Hilton Head Island Town Council member, asks: How do we keep Hilton Head’s reputation and brand fresh and vibrant for generations to come? | Opinion

Important message from Senator Tom Davis yesterday re: SCDOT 278 Improvements. Click below to read the full update from our State Senator who seems to be one of the only elected officials who understands how to use his power.
"I realize state law provides that only work on state highways within a municipality must be with the consent and approval of the proper municipal authorities. But I am making a political statement, not a legal one, and the bottom line is this: If the Town requests changes, even as to areas of the project outside its municipal limits, they must be received, considered, and respected by the SCDOT; otherwise, the project is not going to move forward. "

See Councilman Brown's views on the proposed alternative
-out of scale
-doesn't match Hilton Head Island's values
-capacity
Today it's no turns onto Squire Pope, Spanish Wells, and Wild Horse Roads.
Quickly it will be followed by widening of Spanish Wells, Gum Tree, Squire Pope, and Wild Horse Roads.
Could they be more obvious? More Traffic, More Roads, More People. Is this the Hilton Head Island you moved here for? Is this the experience you want for your family?
Watch this video to the very end (yes really, all 7min 54 sec). Email your reactions to our New Town Manager, Marc Orlando at [email protected].

“I’ve never seen the town or the county come through and disturb a McDonald’s, a Burger King [or], say, a Hyatt hotel. I’ve never seen that happen,” the stand’s owner, a native islander, said.

After years of public outcry at Hilton Head Island Town Hall meetings, public letters to SCDOT, letters to the editor in the Island Packet, Op-Eds in the Packet, Television reports, and various other advocacy pushes, including begging Hilton Head Island Town Council and County Council to tell SCDOT to work within the current pavement, we have decided to organize and champion through this page.
We do not support any of the six alternatives and we do not support more pavement.
Who are we?
First and foremost we are Islanders, we love Hilton Head and desire to call it home, now and in the future. Beyond that, we are Blufftonians and residents of Beaufort County. We are Republicans, Democrats, Independents. We live in gated communities. We live in Stoney. We live in the newly developed communities on the North End of the Island. We live on the South End. We work and live on the Island. We live in Bluffton and work on the Island. We live across the world and have a love for the Island. We are of Gullah descent. We are new to the area. We are retirees and real estate agents and small business owners. We truly are everywhere. And we VOTE.
What do we want?
This is a once in a lifetime project. SCDOT, Hilton Head Island Town Council and Beaufort County Council should treat it as such and create an entrance to Hilton Head that we can all be proud of. In doing so we will:
Recognize the historic significance of Stoney, as a business and residential district that can thrive if we care enough to try.
Replace the deficient bridge.
Improve traffic flow by being creative during our peak times, which account for approximately 5% of our total traffic time.
Landscape and mitigate noise for residents using the spectacular and lush landscaping found throughout the rest of the Island.
Create an environment where current and future businesses thrive.
Find a real solution for safety and speed for residents of Windmill Harbour, Hog Island, Stoney and Spanish Wells road.
Stop the future widening of 278 from the Bridge to the Sea Pines Circle.
