Two of our founders share the story of the creation of Ho'oulu me ka Ikaika. Dr. Pat and Nurse Joyce along with many others felt the need for teenagers and young adults needed a place where they could open up and share their thoughts! Joyce Wong started with our friend Camp Ānuenue, where kids with cancer could feel celebrated and be free to do kid things. However, one day they noticed the need for a place where they could pivot the focus towards expressing yourself, asking the harder questions in a safe nonjudgmental space, and having a community while processing the tougher side of surviving cancer. Along came Dr. Pat with a dream, and since 1992 that dream has continue to blossom to what we see today.
