Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hawaii Island

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hawaii Island Our mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

Since 1963, Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaii has partnered with guardians, schools, corporations and others in the community to pair children (“Littles”) with carefully screened and trained volunteer mentors (“Bigs”). A unique service of BBBS is that each one of these mentoring relationships is monitored and professionally supported by a case manager focused on creating a healthy bond between the i

ndividuals. An affiliate of the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaii mentoring programs have proven, positive impact for youth in the areas of academics, socio-emotional and behavioral outcomes, high school graduation rates, avoidance of juvenile delinquency and college or career readiness. On July 1, 2012, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hawaii began serving children in all four counties through the unification of formerly independent Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies of Honolulu, of Maui, of Kauai and of Hawaii Island. Now statewide, Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawaii provides over 600 children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. The first school-based program on Hawaii Island began in April 2012 serving Littles at Kea’au Elementary with high school Bigs from Kea’au High School. Since then Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hawaii Island has quickly grown both its school-based and community-based programs to support a greater number of volunteer mentors and children needing a positive role model on Hawaii Island. Please join Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hawaii Island in helping to expand our growing ohana here on the Big Island by volunteering to be a mentor, enrolling your keiki, becoming a community or corporate partner, or making a donation.

School-Based Mentoring Program
In our school-based mentoring program, volunteer mentors meet with a child, one-to-one, at an elementary school or community site for about an hour or two each week during the school year. School-based matches meet along side other Bigs and Littles and play games, tutor or just talk. Volunteers in the school-based program may be high school age or older.
