Estuaries, found where freshwater meets the sea, are nurseries for native and endemic fish, home to waterbirds, and gathering places for cultural practices that connect communities to the 'āina. The Office of Planning and Sustainable Development, Coastal Zone Management Program and the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Aquatic Resources have partnered to develop the Hawaiian Estuaries Viewer, the first Statewide map of Hawaiʻi's estuaries. The new Hawaiian Estuaries Viewer makes it easy to explore these unique ecosystems, learn about the coastal wildlife found there, and understand why these places matter to our islands.

In just one year, this hau tree has grown tremendously. It had begun leaning out over the water, growing too low and interfering with water circulation. After pruning, not only does the water circulate better, but more of the beautiful ʻaeʻae-covered low-lying section of the islet is available for waterbirds to rest, forage, and enjoy.

(June 6, 2026)

It was a great day at Lokowaka with a few of our regular volunteers. We took the kayaks out to the islet, where last summer we restored the islet’s isolation within the pond by removing a massive amount of invasive California grass and recreating the open-water separation around it.

The last time we worked here was in January, when we removed some of the plastic covering used to suppress regrowth. Today, we found some California grass returning and learned that six months of covering was not long enough to eliminate all of it. We re-covered the affected area and outplanted some ʻahuʻawa in sections that were free of California grass. We also pruned the hau tree.

Although this islet is still undergoing restoration, nēnē, ʻalae keʻokeʻo, and ducks are already using it for resting and shelter.

ʻAlae keʻokeʻo have remarkably large feet. Their long toes are edged with wide, fleshy lobes of skin that help distribute their weight, allowing them to walk across soft mud and floating vegetation with ease.
