April 30 Program presented by: Jeanne Edwards & Cary Simms Topic: The Rotary District 7570 District Conference

Jeanne Edwards addressed the speeches at the conference. For any who wonder about the benefits of attending, one of the conference speakers expounded on how the Conference had “changed her life.” Jeane reported that the speech that impressed her the most was the one in which the speaker counted to 4, while displaying 1 finger at a time, then said, “A child just died of hunger.” He repeated the process and said, “Another child just died of hunger.” The presentation brought the horror of starvation to life right there in the meeting. One speaker suggested that we must treat all others as if they were all the same. That alone can provide grounds for conversations about world peace, stopping world hunger, finding sustainable solutions to hunger. “Many who are considered rich are poor in those things that matter most.”

Cary Simms described Saturday at the conference. Cary was with the District Youth Exchange students. At 8:00am the high school student that won the RYLA speech contest was scheduled to speak, followed by 3 Youth Exchange students talking about their experience. One of those students was so nervous she wouldn’t practice the night before, but she did just fine that morning. There was a Youth Exchange workshop at 1:30 p.m. followed by a Q&A session. Cary said the workshop was well attended by Rotarians and all stayed for the entire session, which is unusual.

Next year’s District Conference will be in Abingdon Virginia.

May 28th Program presented by: Brian Spencer Sam Terry’s Surprise 90th Birthday Party

No one would never guess he’s 90 by spending time with the man! The surprise assisted by the fact that Sam doesn’t get email, Brian Spencer arranged for cake, ice cream and balloons for the party for Sam at our meeting today. The cake and ice cream were wonderful. The balloons were festive. The party was a total success for all of us.

We were blessed with the presence of Julia Terry, Ed Terry, and Susan Randall. Ed and Susan are Julia and Sam’s son and daughter.

Barry Mayberry shared his favorite Rotary memory of Sam. The club was scheduled for highway cleanup. Sam came in and participated, just days after having stints put in due to heart issues. Sam said he was feeling okay, so he came to work.

Dennis Ward shared that, at one time, Sam worked the auctions for Dawn Auction. Dennis said it was rare at those events that one or more people didn’t walk up to Sam, place a hand on his shoulder, and say, “I remember you from high school. You sure did kick my butt back then.” Sam simply asked, “Did they need it?”

It was great to celebrate with our long term member Sam!

May 14 Program
Presented by: Tiffany Turner
Topic: Hillsville Tractor Supply

Tiffany Turner comes to Carroll County from Wisconsin. She has been manager for the Hillsville Tractor Supply for the past year and oversaw the construction. She has worked in retail for 30 years. Her husband’s family lives in Henry County. They have 2 grown children, so they are empty nesters. The younger son will move to Hillsville as he loves this area. Tractor Supply started as a mail order business in Chicago, Illinois. It expanded into North Dakota and now has stores in every state except Alaska. Texas has the biggest Tractor Supply presence, having 300 stores. They are equipped to supply farm supplies, including livestock supplies, fencing, gates, waterers, chicken coops, and more. They offer livestock feed, pet supplies, gardening supplies, and lawn care equipment. In addition, they offer a pet wash center. Tractor Supply is active in supporting the community. They assist 4H and FFA with fundraising. They donate to local rescue squads. They work with the Galax Animal Shelter – donating food. They donate to the Cruise-Ins. They work with the Life Center putting in greenhouses. In response to a question, Tiffany stated that their # 1 selling product is their dog food. Members thanked Tiffany for Tractor Supply‘s support of the community.
