April 30 Program presented by: Jeanne Edwards & Cary Simms Topic: The Rotary District 7570 District Conference
Jeanne Edwards addressed the speeches at the conference. For any who wonder about the benefits of attending, one of the conference speakers expounded on how the Conference had “changed her life.” Jeane reported that the speech that impressed her the most was the one in which the speaker counted to 4, while displaying 1 finger at a time, then said, “A child just died of hunger.” He repeated the process and said, “Another child just died of hunger.” The presentation brought the horror of starvation to life right there in the meeting. One speaker suggested that we must treat all others as if they were all the same. That alone can provide grounds for conversations about world peace, stopping world hunger, finding sustainable solutions to hunger. “Many who are considered rich are poor in those things that matter most.”
Cary Simms described Saturday at the conference. Cary was with the District Youth Exchange students. At 8:00am the high school student that won the RYLA speech contest was scheduled to speak, followed by 3 Youth Exchange students talking about their experience. One of those students was so nervous she wouldn’t practice the night before, but she did just fine that morning. There was a Youth Exchange workshop at 1:30 p.m. followed by a Q&A session. Cary said the workshop was well attended by Rotarians and all stayed for the entire session, which is unusual.
