Time with Teepa - When someone seems angry or upset: how to respond without making it worse
You'll see how one missing cup of coffee becomes a real-world lesson in anticipatory distress, brain change, and the power of letting the person feel in control β€” before gently moving things forward.
Whether you're supporting someone at home or in a care setting, these skills are learnable. Our Champion Courses 1+2 and the Dementia Care Partner Guide are both great places to start. πŸ‘‡

A statistic claims care partners face a 63% higher mortality rate than non-caregivers their age. But the research that followed tells a very different story.

In this week's episode, Teepa Snow talks us through what the science actually shows β€” and what separates care partners who thrive from those who burn out.

Time with Teepa - When they don't recognize you: how to connect during a visit

What do you do when you show up to visit β€” and the person you love doesn't know who you are?
In this episode, Teepa demonstrates exactly what a visit can look like when the person living with brain change no longer recognizes a family member. No pressure to remember. No correcting. Just a warm introduction, something meaningful to look at and hold, and a real moment of connection built from scratch.
The relationship may look different than it used to. But connection is still possible β€” and Teepa talks us through how to find it.
Are you navigating a situation like this one and not sure where to start? We'd love to help. Reach out and let us know what you're experiencing. πŸ‘‡

Time with Teepa - How do you adapt hand-under-hand when someone can't move their arm?

Here's one way to shift how you support hand-under-hand when the person you're caring for has contractures, had a stroke, or has stiffness, arthritis, or another condition that makes moving their arm or hand painful or difficult.
Teepa talks us through a simple adaptation β€” using contact at the hand and arm to deliver both the motor message and the sensory one, even when the person can't actively move with you.
Have a question of your own? Reach out β€” we'd love to hear from you.
And if you're looking for a great place to practice skills like this one, our Champion Courses are built for exactly that. πŸ‘‡

Time with Teepa - When they refuse: responding to "no" in personal care

What do you do when the person you're supporting flatly refuses a shower β€” and they haven't changed clothes in days?
In this episode, Teepa and Matthew walk through exactly what's happening in the brain during a refusal and why pushing back almost always makes things worse. You'll see what a real care conversation looks like β€” from the body language (supportive stance, breaking eye contact) to the moment the agenda gets dropped and curiosity takes over.
Teepa talks us through three reasons why a person living with brain change may not recognize their own odor, why anticipatory distress triggers a "no" before you've even said a word, and how a stain on a shirt became the turning point in a personal care win.
This is real-world dementia care β€” practical, compassionate, and grounded in how the brain actually works.

When dementia enters the picture, it's easy to start cataloging the losses.
But what if can’t is only part of the story?
In Episode 358 of the Dementia Care Partner Podcast, Teepa Snow and Greg Phelps talk through why brain change β€” not brain loss β€” is the framing that helps care partners respond most effectively. Learn about neurodegeneration and neuroplasticity, different ways of asking the same question, and why forgiving yourself isn't optional.

Time with Teepa β€” When sweets and overeating become a challenge in dementia
When dementia changes the brain, it can also change the signals around hunger, fullness, and the pull toward sweets. Glucose metabolism shifts, recognition of "I've already had some" fades, and suddenly mealtimes and snack times look very different than they used to.
In this episode of Time with Teepa, Teepa talks us through a real-time demonstration of what she calls the art of substitution β€” small, practical adjustments that help the person you're supporting feel satisfied without setting up a battle over food.
You'll see how to:
βœ” Put out small amounts at a time, so something is there without too much being there
βœ” Layer a higher-quality option over what's already out, so they eat the better choice first
βœ” Offer part of a protein bar or snack instead of the whole thing
βœ” Rethink where sweets are stored β€” sometimes out of sight really does help
βœ” Be honest about the fact that care partners get the cravings, too
This isn't about restriction or control. It's about meeting brain change with skill, creativity, and a little bit of strategy.
For more on why eating, appetite, and food preferences shift the way they do β€” and how to respond with confidence β€” explore Teepa's book Understanding the Changing Brain.

Time with Teepa β€” Why does someone with Lewy Body Dementia always seem restless?

A care partner on TikTok asked Teepa a question many people supporting someone with Lewy Body Dementia have wondered: why does she always seem restless and unable to settle?
In this episode of Time with Teepa, Teepa talks us through what may be happening beneath that constant up-and-down movement β€” from the way Lewy body affects the ability to settle, to visual hallucinations that pull attention across the room, to the very real need to stay mobile in a condition with the highest fall risk of any dementia.
You'll hear practical ideas for:
βœ” Positioning the chair so standing up feels stable and supported
βœ” Offering fiddle items for hands and eyes
βœ” Checking the visual field for what might be catching her attention
βœ” Working on cruising, stooping, and recovery to build balance
βœ” Bringing in gentle movement practices like Tai Chi
Restlessness isn't something to stop β€” it's something to understand and support.
For more on why brain change shows up the way it does, and how to respond with skill and compassion, explore Teepa's book Understanding the Changing Brain β€” a go-to resource for care partners and professionals alike.
