Dr Jenna Baker, the new CEO of the American Association of Suicidology, addresses the opening plenary session of the annual meeting in St Louis during which the AAS reinstated its 2017 policy paper that MAID is not su***de and that the term “Physician-Assisted Suicide” is a misleading, incorrect misnomer. In 2023 the 2017 statement had been withdrawn from the AAS website but under Dr Baker’s leadership, the heavily researched initial viewpoint of 2017 was restored. An important victory since language often shapes the debate and who would know better than the experts who study su***de professionally and whose mission is su***de prevention!

Contrary to the argument of extremist groups in the Disability Rights movement such as the religiously affiliated and misleadingly named Patients Rights Action Fund which has filed numerous suits to invalidate MAID laws, disabled people support the legalization of MAID at the same percentage as able-bodied people.
