We're excited to announce that you'll have three chances this upcoming week at SOHIP's Boston Summer Series to see a new program of ours – Silentwoods Collective: Lessons for a King

Lessons for a King showcases the innovation and virtuosity that flourished in the middle years of France’s ancien régime. French composers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries—and their English counterparts across the Channel—addressed the crushing authority and repression of their time through music. These humble and most obedient musical servants (as they were obliged to designate themselves on their publications’ title pages) wove cautionary tales and reflection into their work, implicitly reminding rulers of their own fragility, moral responsibility, and temporal existence.

The works of Clérambault, Rameau, Rebel, Barriere, Purcell, and Locke draw on mythology and rhetoric to navigate an environment of social hegemony. Hidden within these gorgeous pieces, we find cryptic warnings to rulers on the dangers of hubris and greed, as well as messages of hope that humanity will triumph over cruelty.

Join us on June 12th for an evening of music, and comedy inspired by the lively coffeehouses of 17th and 18th century Europe, where artists, thinkers, and provocateurs gathered to exchange ideas, challenge conventions, and entertain one another into the night!

This event is generously hosted by Hillsborough’s most elegant and intimate venue “The Emporium”, at 5 West Main Street, and catered by “Olive and Oak”, offering food and drink for purchase. Adult beverages will also be available for purchase.

Experience the genius musical writing of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Coffee Cantata”, a tale of obsession, rebellion, and a young woman’s defiance. Featured alongside virtuosic, and evocative selections by musical pop stars of the 17th and 18th centuries George Frideric Handel, Henry Purcell, Georg Philipp Telemann, and Claudio Monteverdi, Bach’s Coffee Cantata challenges authority and convention with humor and wit as an obstinate patriarch battles with his caffeine addicted young daughter pining for the liberty to enjoy just one more cup.

This fantastical evening is brought to life by the award-winning musicians, and team of Antrim, NH based organization, Silentwoods Collective, with beautiful period costumes, half-staging, lights, and English subtitles.

Café Fantasia is led by director and cellist, Andrew Koutroubas, Harlequin and masked-trickster, Jackie Davis, soprano, Carely DeFranko, tenor, Morgan Mastrangelo, bass Daniel Fridley, and performed on historical instruments typical of the 18th century by Silentwoods virtuoso violinists Danilo Bonina, Keats Deifenbach, Nelli Jabotinsky-Herskovits, flutist, Kelsey Burnham, lutenist, Luce Burrell, bassist, Guinevere Conner-Fridley, harpsichordist, Nathan Mondry.

Performance length: Approximately 90 minutes, including intermission

Concert Announcement!
"Talk About Bach"
Saturday, May 16th, at 7:00 PM
Hancock Historical Socieity

Join New Hampshire cellist, Andrew Koutroubas, to experience J.S. Bach’s intimate, and timeless “Suites for Unaccompanied Cello” performed on a historical gut string cello typical of Bach’s time (1685-1750).

Through his cello suites, Bach unites varied cultures and styles by including six pieces in each suite characteristic to those different cultures. Each suite begins with a prelude, a meandering, wandering fantasia traversing the many colors, tonalities, and range of the cello, which is followed by five dances.

Before the performance, Andrew Koutroubas will give a brief talk about Bach’s life, the time in which he lived, and on the varied characteristics of the dances of Germany, France, Spain, and Italy represented in Bach’s cello suites.

Generously hosted by the Hancock Historical Society, this evening will welcome you to the Orland Eaton room on the second-floor ballroom of the Charles Symonds house, built 1808-1809. Home to the HHS Museum since 1903, the house has served as a residence, tavern, dormitory and boarding house. This performance, including the pre-concert talk, will run approximately one hour and thirty minutes.
