Holiday Spirit
Over the holidays, the Hillsborough Police Department came together for someone who had literally lost everything due to Covid-19. His name is Larry. In April of 2020, Larry waved down one of HPD’s officers to ask for help. While the Officer was speaking with him, Larry said that when Covid-19 started, his wife unfortunately took a turn for the worst and passed away. A very short time after Larry’s wife passed, he was laid off from his job due to Covid-19. Now Larry, being alone and jobless, needed a way to give his wife a proper funeral. Larry gave up his residence and sold his only vehicle to afford a funeral. Now, Larry takes up odd jobs to make ends meet.
Larry currently resides at a local motel when he can afford it. Occasionally, Larry is unable to cover rent and has asked HPD to assist him. Members of HPD have contacted multiple organizations to assist Larry, but due to the pandemic, many places are not taking additional people in. As a result, HPD Officers have given Larry enough money to cover his rent expense from their own pockets.
Larry is an extremely kind, soft spoken gentleman who always has a giant smile. Officers from other agencies that know Larry have commented on how positive and kind he is. Larry’s goal is to be able to find consistent work so he can get back on his feet.
Due to Larry being such an upstanding citizen and never giving up, HPD ran a fundraiser for him. Today, HPD had the privilege of presenting Larry with a car, tools, clothing, gift cards, and money. I hope these kind gifts will assist Larry in finding constant employment and housing. Larry should be viewed as an example for his courage to continue even when life seems like it hit rock bottom. HPD wishes Larry the best on his upcoming endeavors.
