📣TONIGHT, Tuesday, June 23📣

You don't want to miss this presentation!

Join us at the Hodson House (next door to the Highland House Museum) at 7 pm.

If you have any stories, pictures, or connections to the Gist Settlement, we're sure the Gist Settlement Legacy would love to talk to you!

This event is free and open to the public.

Didn't make it to our Gist Settlement cauldron dedication ceremony a couple of weekends ago?

Not really sure what or where the Gist Settlement was?

Join us tomorrow evening, Tuesday, June 23, at 7 pm for an informational presentation given by Gist Settlement Legacy secretary Paige Green at the Hodson House.

Paige will present the history of the Highland County Penn Township Gist Settlement. The program will tell of the establishment of the Settlement in the early 1800s when Gist freed his 300 Virginia plantation slaves and relocated them to Highland and Brown County.

Today the Highland County unit is the only one to fully survive and is currently overseen by the Gist Settlement Legacy Board of Trustees.

This program is free and open to the public.

Today, we commemorate Memorial Day. Originally known as Decoration Day, it was established by John A. Logan, Commander in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, to remember the soldiers who died during the Civil War.

🇺🇲 Highland County has a long history of honoring its fallen, all the way back to the earliest days of the holiday, a tradition we proudly continue to this day.

The first article recalls the 1878 Decoration Day services in Hillsboro. The second clipping is a picture from the 1976 Bicentennial celebration efforts of honoring the earliest veterans of the county, our Revolutionary War soldiers.
